i dont know the statistics but i have worked in shelters as a volunteer and many of the older dogs understand basic commands. some dogs are even hunting trained dogs or even better in many cases. there was a hunting dog in one of the shelters that would do whatever you said. he would even ?step back? when i told him. very smart dogs in shelters.

Yeah--you read that right. Google announced the launch of a new mobile payment system called "Google Wallet" on Thursday. The service lets you store your credit cards inside your smartphone, then use the device to make contact-free payments. All you do is wave your phone in front of a special sensor, and--hocus pocus!--the payment is made.

Google Wallet isn't magic, though (hey, this isn't Apple we're talking about). It uses something called Near Field Communication to let your phone communicate wirelessly with sensors at stores' checkout lanes. Support for Near Field Communication, or NFC, is built into Google's Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) operating system. A phone also needs the right hardware to be able to put it to use.

Now, I know: This all sounds a bit wacky. The whole mobile payment concept, after all, is new and uncharted territory for most of us. That's why I've put together this massive Google Wallet FAQ. Read on, and get answers to all your burning questions.

Google's hoping you're ready to put your money where your phone is.

Who can use Google Wallet?

Anyone with a compatible phone. To start, the service will support only Google's Nexus S 4G phone on Sprint. Google says, however, it'll be working to add more devices as time moves on. The service is also being offered only in the United States as of now.

So if I have any other phone, I'm just out of luck?

Nexus S 4G smartphone Not necessarily. As reported by TechCrunch, Google is working on a special kind of sticker that will allow non-NFC-compatible phones to access the Google Wallet service. It'll reportedly be a more limited experience than you'd get on a fully supported phone, but it'll at least let you make basic credit card payments.

What about non-Android phones?

Google has yet to mention anything about support for phones outside of its Android operating system. According to IDG News reporter Nancy Gohring, Google representatives at Thursday's Wallet event "did not respond to a question about whether other kinds of phones are welcome on the platform."

Will Google Wallet work right now?

Whoa there, Nelly--not yet. Today was just an announcement. Google says it's field-testing the Google Wallet technology right now and will release it publicly "soon."

Will Google Wallet work with any credit card?

Not exactly. At launch, Google Wallet will integrate only with Citi MasterCards. The service will also have a built-in "Google Prepaid Card" that can store money added from any other credit card. (Google even gives you a free $10 credit on the prepaid card when you first sign up.)

Google says it's "working quickly" to add more credit card options into the service and plans to eventually support "all the cards you keep in your wallet today."

Will Google Wallet work with any other kinds of cards?

In some cases, Google Wallet can store loyalty cards--store memberships and the likes--and gift cards, too. Google envisions the Wallet program one day handling things like driver's licenses, hotel keys, and even concert tickets, too.

Will most stores accept Google Wallet as a payment?

"Hundreds of thousands" of businesses are already set up to do it, according to Google. The reason: Google Wallet uses MasterCard's PayPass system to accept transactions on the merchant end, and that system is already fairly widely deployed across the U.S. You can find a list of places in your area that'll work with Google Wallet.

So how exactly will I make a Google Wallet payment?

When you're in a store that supports MasterCard PayPass, you'll type in a PIN and wave your phone in front of the PayPass terminal when it's time to pay. It's just like swiping a credit card--except, you know, without the actual credit card or swiping motion.

Will I get a receipt?

Yep--just like normal. Later this year, though, Google is planning to tack on a new feature that'll let stores send receipts electronically right back through the Wallet application.

What if I'm in an area where I get bad reception?

Doesn't matter--Google says no network connection is needed to make a Google Wallet payment.

What if my phone's battery dies?

If your battery dies, you're out of luck. The phone has to be powered on in order for Google Wallet to work.

Will Google Wallet cost me anything to use?

Nope, not a thing (aside from the emotional cost of strangers' stares as they look at you in bewilderment).

There is one exception, though: If you opt to use the Google Prepaid Card part of the service, you may eventually run into fees. Google says adding funds onto that card will be fee-free "at least until the end of 2011"--which makes it sound like some type of cost might be in the cards, so to speak, at some point down the line.

Will my Citi MasterCard automatically work with Google Wallet?

Probably, but you can double-check to be sure. Any card added to Google Wallet will also have a $100 payment limit at first; you'll have to get an authorization code from Citi to activate your full credit line.

I've lived in St. Louis for 33 years. During that time, the tornado sirens have sounded maybe 1-2 times per 10 years ? let's say 5 times in 33 years ? and never with a touchdown.

This year they've already sounded 3 times. In January a touchdown landed in a neighborhood a few miles to the south; in April one hit our airport and surrounding neighborhoods to the north. Today, when the sirens went off throughout the afternoon, there was blessedly no touchdown. But, with Joplin heavy in our hearts, any relief was bittersweet.

Bill McKibben, a dauntless advocate for action on climate change, wrote a powerful op-ed piece for The Washington Post on Wednesday called "A link between climate change and Joplin tornadoes? Never!" He lists numerous recent extreme climate events, and intersperses, tongue-in-cheek, the standard retorts of climate-change deniers:

It is far better to think of these as isolated, unpredictable, discrete events ... It's far smarter to repeat to yourself the comforting mantra that no single weather event can ever be directly tied to climate change. There have been tornadoes before, and floods ? that's the important thing.

And he ends with a zinger:

If worst ever did come to worst, it's reassuring to remember what the U.S. Chamber of Commerce told the Environmental Protection Agency in a recent filing: that there's no need to worry because "populations can acclimatize to warmer climates via a range of behavioral, physiological, and technological adaptations."

I'm pretty sure that's what residents are telling themselves in Joplin today.

The piece already has 11,287 recommendations and 1,281 comments. As happens here at 13.7 when this topic comes up, the comments include a barrage of denials, excoriating Bill as an ignorant rabble-rouser and offering countless URLs of refutation. (N.B. I happen to know Bill McKibben, and he has a mind of steel.) As also happens here, the comments also include a barrage of challenges to the denials and refutations of the URLs.

It all felt like pretty familiar reading.

So here's what I don't get: What motivates a denier? If you are a denier-reader of this blog, what motivates you? I'm not asking for more URLs ? we already have plenty of those on file. I'm asking about intent.

I know what motivates my position: the sirens, the polar-bear pictures, the IPCC reports, fear for my grandchildren's future. What motivates the denial?

The secret is to take your money affirmation and start asking why over and over until you reach the why that really moves you. When is this, you may ask? You will know without a doubt. Chances are, it will choke you up or make you cry when you find it.

To make a money affirmation work, identify the real desire behind it. Find the why that makes you cry. Then, use that desire to fuel your affirmation. In that, I mean, use that burning desire to create the new reality in the message you send your subconscious. For example, let us say your affirmation is, ?I Am making a six-figure income.? Perhaps your real reason for wanting a six-figure income is to be able to stop stressing over bills and finances and be able to spend your time with family and friends comfortable in knowing that your bills and expenses are covered. When you write your affirmation, or recite it, or write stories about it, always focus on this underlying desire for wanting a six-figure income. You might repeat throughout the day, ?I am making a six-figure income and I do not worry about bills. I am able to spend time with, and enjoy time with, family and friends. I love my life.?

So, get started with your money affirmation today. Start your journey to more money and the freedom and benefits that money can bring. Identify what your real desire for having more money. Use that underlying desire to fuel your affirmation. Lastly, the best advice I was ever given that I now pass along to you, never ever quit.

Working Stiffs: Book Review : The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson

We've had the conversation about my Kindle addiction, right?? Well, in my latest fit of "I've got to have this book, NOW", my fingers did the walking and purchased The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson after watching his interview on Jon Stewart's Daily Show.? Damn that Jon Stewart.

The book is beyond compelling.? Why?? Ronson uses vignettes to tell the story.? He drew me in with a mystery of all things.? A mystery in a non fiction book.? It made me smile.? And throught the mystery he illustrated one of the main points in his book.

I'm not going to tell you what the mystery is, because I don't want to ruin the surprise for you.? Suffice to say I read the entire book in one sitting.? And it's non-fiction!? I never do that.

His book is compelling for another reason.? It gave me so much more to think about in terms of my villans and the other people my hero will be working against.? His story about Tony, the man who chose to feign mental illness rather than go to jail took me on a complete character arc.? I found myself rooting for Tony until the last moment when the hammer dropped.

The main point of the book is that with a simple test, you too can identify a psychopath.? And if you've worked in the corporate world, odds are you've seen more than one up close.? Jon's example is Al Dunlap from Sunbeam Corporation.? Mine shall remain unnamed, but let's just say he was easy to identify with the test.

Are there other non-fiction books you've used in this way?? Tell me more.? My fingers are itching to give Jeff Bezos more of my money.

p.s.? Jon Ronson captured my heart and soul last night, and interrupted my normal sleep so I'm up at 5:12 a.m. in the dark in Central Texas wondering how many psychopaths live within walking distance.? It's worse than zombies.
