GOOD DEEDS ? Sarasota Herald | Central Ohio New Home Builders

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation has awarded $75,000 to CareerEdge, a partnership of business, civic and philanthropic organizations designed to leverage private and public dollars to provide opportunities for better jobs and wages in Manatee and Sarasota counties. The mission of CareerEdge is fivefold: to advance low- to mid-wage workers into higher-paying jobs; to provide employers with qualified and skilled workers; to provide workers with family-sustaining wages; to improve the regional workforce; and to make the region?s businesses more competitive.

Wells Fargo has donated $10,000 to the South Florida Museum?s Admission Scholarship Program. The money will provide educational enrichment opportunities in natural and cultural history to children who attend schools and community programs that serve economically disadvantaged populations. The donation will cover admission for more than 1,000 children.

Art Center Sarasota has received a $50,000 grant from the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation for the renovation of its reception area and front galleries and a $15,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Sarasota?s BOOST Initiative Fund to buy an integrated software system.

Junior Achievement of Manatee/Sarasota raised more than $34,000 at its annual fundraising breakfast. The event was sponsored by Robert W. Baird Co. and Grapevine Communications Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations. In the 2010-2011 school year, the group delivered educational programs to 290 local classrooms and about 6,000 students. The money raised will be used to fund an Economics of Success program for all area eighth-graders and to increase the number of high school students who benefit from JA?s personal finance program.

Sarasota philanthropists Keith and Linda Monda have donated $600,000 for scholarships to New College of Florida. The money will go to students from out of state, based on need.

The Mondas? gift will be matched 70 percent by the state of Florida, bringing the total value to $1,020,000. With the state match, the endowed scholarship should generate $40,000 to $50,000 a year for students.

Keith Monda is the former president and chief operating officer of Coach Inc. in New York. Before joining Coach, he held executive positions at the Timberland Co., J. Crew, Bunge Corp. and Pfizer Inc. He is a member of the New College Board of Trustees.

Encore National Bank hosted the Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce Business Card Exchange, which featured the Shoes for Kids drive that collects 3,000 to 4,000 pairs of sneakers annually to ensure that needy Charlotte County students start the school year with a new pair of shoes.

The United Way of Manatee County has given Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast a 2011-12 Investments for Agency Programs grant of $38,790 for its Community-Based Mentoring Program. In the program, volunteers provide children with individualized time and attention on a regular basis. Most of the children are from single-parent families.

BB/BS received a grant of $2,500 from the Annette J. Hagens Memorial Foundation for its Bigs-in-School Program in Sarasota, in which volunteers meet with children for one hour per week during the school day to develop a friendship.

The Women?s Leadership Initiative of United Way of Manatee County awarded $1,725 to BB/BS for its Mentoring Children of Promise Program. The program is designed for children who have a parent or parental figure in prison.

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County has given Forty Carrots Family Center a grant of $10,000, made possible through the Edward K. Roberts Fund, to support community outreach parenting education classes for single teen mothers through Forty Carrots? On Wheels Parenting Program.

Since 1996, Forty Carrots has partnered with CYESIS, Sarasota County?s Teen Parent Program, to provide young mothers with the education they need to be confident, capable parents. Forty Carrots currently facilitates eight classes per week at Riverview and North Port high schools for pregnant and parenting teens.

Manatee County philanthropists Al and Barbara Siemer, along with the Columbus Foundation and the United Way of Central Ohio, have announced the launch of the Siemer Institute for Family Stability in Columbus, Ohio. In 10 communities in Florida and Ohio, the institute will spearhead efforts to assist families at risk of homelessness stay in their homes and keep their children in their schools. The institute is funded by a $4.9 million gift from the Siemer Family Foundation. In Manatee and Sarasota counties, the foundation has funded the Building Strong Families Initiative, which has helped 1,855 families with 5,923 children since 2003.

Molly and David Jackson, owners of the New Balance store in Sarasota, have donated sports bras worth $1,500 to help aid in the recovery for 30 post-biopsy and post-mastectomy breast cancer patients. The bras will go to women referred to the Sarasota Memorial Breast Care Health Center who are uninsured or underinsured.

Marcus Gordon of Curbside Appeal, a local landscaping company, was the platinum sponsor at Rock Out for a Cause, hosted by Taking Back Lives and the Lakewood Ranch High School Key Club. Rock Out for a Cause, held in April, was the perfect place for Curbside Appeal to fulfill its mission of making the community and world a better place.

The Farr Law Firm supported Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity in its efforts to give a local woman, Dorothy Carter, her own home. The firm donated the land the home was built on and in March employees helped to build the home. On May 26, Roger Miller III, real estate attorney and past president of the Charlotte County chapter of Habitat, conducted the closing for Carter on behalf of Habitat. The formal dedication was June 25.

Meals on Wheels Plus of Manatee has received a grant of $41,262 from the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation to purchase two new cargo vans for meal delivery. Delivery vans are essential to the Meals on Wheels Plus services, as they are used by staff to deliver large quantities of meals to groups of volunteers in outlying areas of the county. Without the vans, many homebound clients might not receive a daily hot meal.

Sales associates and other employees of Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate in Florida have donated $5,000 to the Realogy Charitable Foundation in support of the American Red Cross and the Realtor Relief Fund of the National Association of Realtors. This contribution, made through Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate CARES, will provide assistance to people who have been impacted by the recent weather disasters in numerous states. Coldwell Banker has donated more than $2.97 million to a wide array of nonprofit educational, health, welfare, environmental and cultural organizations throughout Florida since 2003.

SunTrust Bank donated $10,500 to the United Way of Manatee County on July 1. The gift represented the bank?s corporate donation. SunTrust?s employees also pledged $29,500 to United Way of Manatee, which collaborates with 43 local human service organizations and currently funds more than 70 programs and initiatives.

The Pines of Sarasota recently received a grant of $7,400 from the Pickard Circle of Light, which is managed by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. The Pines Education Institute of S.W. Florida will use $5,000 to produce hands-on training DVDs for dementia caregivers. The remaining $2,400 will provide scholarships to enable 15 in-home caregivers to attend the March 2012 Caregiver Conference at the Pines.

Gateway Bank of Southwest Florida was recently awarded the 2010 President?s Volunteer Service Gold Award for its contributions to the community. In addition, four Gateway employees received individual service recognition. The President?s Volunteer Service Award was created by the President?s Council on Service and Civic Participation to encourage more people to serve their communities. Eligibility is based on hour requirements, which vary by age. Recipients receive an official lapel pin, a personalized certificate of achievement and a congratulatory letter from President Barack Obama.

The four employees who earned individual awards are Shaun Merriman, president and CEO, who volunteered 262 hours in 2010; Michael Feduccia, vice president and financial adviser, who volunteered 134.5 hours; Jamie Jones, assistant vice president and credit analyst/portfolio manager, with 103.5 hours; and Susie Kruse, vice president and banking center manager, with 101.5 hours.

Craig McSmythe of Sure Footed Flooring LLC is joining with his clients to provide nonslip floor treatment to local nonprofit organizations at no charge. He calls the program the Safety Triangle. For every square foot the company treats for a commercial client, Sure Footed Flooring will also treat the floors at the client?s designated charity, and provide a two-year warranty on the free service. Sure Footed Flooring is not a coating; it penetrates the surface, creating a treadlike area that is safer to walk on.

Family Network on Disabilities of Manatee/Sarasota Inc., FND Manasota, recently received three grants in support of its in-home respite care program, Sarasota/Manatee Respite Services. SMRS serves families of children with disabilities and special needs in Manatee and Sarasota County. The United Way of Manatee County gave a $5,000 grant to provide services in Manatee, the Annette J. Hagens Memorial Foundation gave $2,500 for services in Manatee and Sarasota counties and the United Way of South Sarasota County gave $2,500 to provide respite care services in South County.

Members of the Bradenton Marauders baseball team attended a pottery class July 11 at ArtCenter Manatee and created bowls for the October 2011 Empty Bowls fundraiser for The Food Bank of Manatee.

Dr. Anne Chauvet, of Critical Care Veterinary Specialists of Sarasota LLC, has established a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to assist pet owners who cannot afford the cost of specialized veterinary care. Board members for the Specialists for Animals Foundation Inc. include Chauvet, Deborah Millman, executive director of the Humane Society of Sarasota County, Renee Hamad, Nick Mayer, CCVSS practice manager, and Sue Engelhart, of Sue Engelhart Associates.

We Care Manatee, through the Gulf Coast Gives initiative of the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, is raising money to provide free specialty and primary medical care to low income, uninsured residents of Manatee County. Fundraising for the current project began June 15 and continues until July 31. The goal of this initiative is to raise $900, which would provide six patients with medical supplies needed after surgery, such as walkers and crutches. Charlotte State Bank concluded its monthlong pet supply drive with an ?adoption day? at the Murdock branch June 25. The Animal Welfare League of Charlotte County brought a half-dozen shelter animals to the bank for the event. Throughout June, shelter ?wish lists? were posted at all five bank locations. Customers and staff donated pet food, supplies and other items. Bank employees also raised $127 for the shelter by donating $2 each for the privilege of wearing jeans to work on a specified Friday.

Discount Battery Supply, 1127 53rd Ave. W. in Bradenton, is concerned about proposed cuts in the salaries of Manatee County teachers, who often pay for school supplies from their own pockets. Through Aug. 17, $1 from the sale of each watch battery and $4 from the sale of each cellular battery will be set aside to purchase school supplies.

Publix Super Market Charities recently donated $14,500 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast. The donation was given in support of the programs throughout the six counties served by the nonprofit.

Shirley Dabringhaus, broker/owner of Sunset Realty in Sarasota, recently organized a drive to collect donations for Resurrection House and was overwhelmed by the response. Not only did most of her associates and their family members contribute but also the staff at the Constitution Square Executive Office Suites and several of their fellow tenants.

Resurrection House, a day center for the homeless, received bags of clothing, bedding, towels, shoes and other useful items. Dieter Lau volunteered the use of his van to transport the donations.

The Family Partnership Center in Bradenton has been selected to receive a one-time $50,000 award from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The money will be used to implement a new program for lower income Hispanic parents living in Manatee County with children up to 3 years old. The grant will be administered by Avance Inc., of San Antonio, Texas, which operates one of the oldest and largest parent and early childhood education programs in the country. Family Partnership?s program, like Avance?s, will promote community development, positive parenting skills and behaviors, school readiness, parental involvement in the schools, adult education and civic engagement.

The Sarasota Rotary Foundation recently presented Children First with $2,000 for daily Nutrition Services. The nonprofit agency serves more than 600 of Sarasota County?s most vulnerable children, including serving meals that meet more than 50 percent of their weekly nutritional needs.

The Sarasota YMCA is one of 40 West Florida nonprofits participating in the Sweetbay, SunTrust and Connect Your Cause ?Nutrition is in the Bag? program to encourage healthy back-to-school snacking. The four nonprofits that generate the most coupons will win $1,250 each and the top three will share $10,000 in Sweetbay gift cards.

Tidewater Preserve, the 373-acre gated, master-planned community along the Manatee River, recently partnered with The Children?s Academy of Southwest Florida Inc. to offer a free children?s tennis summer camp. Steve Larkin, director of amenities at Tidewater, teamed up with Dr. Geri Pasquerella, executive director of the academy, to offer two sessions to the campers. Six students participated. The preserve is also offering discounted tennis sessions for children through Aug. 11. The Children?s Academy of Southwest Florida is a nonprofit provider of child care services in Manatee County.

At an awards gala in June, the Tampa Bay Area Chapter of Meeting Professionals awarded its 2011 charitable grants to Metropolitan Ministries and The Spine Foundation. Metropolitan Ministries aids poor and homeless families through services that alleviate suffering, promote dignity and instill self-sufficiency. The Spine Foundation focuses on providing patients with financial support and services essential to treat spinal conditions and disorders at a location of the patient?s choice.

An online photo contest will raise money for Majical Miniatures, an animal sanctuary in Parrish that rescues and rehabilitates wildlife and farm animals. Backyard Getaway and Team Legal Eagles are co-sponsoring ?Take the Picture? in August, September and October, with a different theme for each month. Money will be raised from entry fees and online voting ? $1 per vote. Majical Miniatures and Making Strides Against Cancer will split the funds. For details, go to takethepicture.org.
