The Basic Kitchen Cabinets And What You Need To Know | Articles ...

How organized your kitchen is depends on what type of kitchen cabinets you have for storage. They are also the main contributors to your kitchen?s appearance. There are literally hundreds of styles to choose from depending on your preference and decor. Kitchen cabinets come in a variety of materials, including veneers, hardwoods, and painted particle board.

Most all kitchen cabinets have one thing in common; from the highest quality to the unfinished ones. Fundamentally they are all boxes.

Some of the boxes sit on the floor and countertops are placed on top. Others have doors, shelves and drawers but they are all a basic box shape.

Since the design is so basic, you can purchase several separate units and join them together to make a customized kitchen cabinet system that will fit all your needs. There are kitchen cabinets designed to fit under sinks and over the top of stoves and refrigerators. You can install kitchen cabinets yourself; however you do need to make sure the cabinets are level, plumb and flush with each other when they are installed. The kitchen cabinets should be put in after the wiring and plumbing is installed and before installing the flooring. When you are installing the cabinets you should take off, or leave the doors off, until after the kitchen cabinets are installed. This is also true of drawers and shelves.

You need to make sure the walls the kitchen cabinets are going on are smooth, clean and level. You want to remember that upper cabinets can get very heavy; especially when loaded with dinnerware or canned foods. So these cabinets have to be fastened to wall studs to make them secure. A least three screws should penetrate the wall studs by at least 1 1/2 inches on each cabinet.

If you are installing the kitchen cabinets yourself you will need at least one helper for lifting and holding the cabinets in place while you are installing them. The key is to install the cabinets perfectly level. If you don?t get them exactly right they will look sloppy and the drawers and doors will not close properly.

Sometimes it is actually easier and faster to have a professional come in and install your kitchen cabinets. If you hire someone who is familiar with installing cabinetry it will be a lot smoother process. Another option is to install the cabinet boxes yourself. Then you can hire a finish carpenter or cabinet installer to do the trickier parts of installing, such as mounting and adjusting door and drawers. You can ask the personnel at your local home improvement store for independent installers who install cabinets. It is always a good idea to make sure you ask for references and check them out before you have them proceed.

Whether you are adding more kitchen cabinets to your kitchen or designing a kitchen you will have a wide variety of styles and materials to choose from. You will be able to create the kitchen of your dreams and at the same time have plenty of kitchen cabinets to give you extra storage space.
