FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - It was a beautiful night to be out at the Vera Bradley Foundation's Golf Classic.? Hundreds of people turned out.? And between that and the tennis event, they raised more than a million dollars this year.
The Co-Founder of the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer said they're turning the corner! Thanks to the community's support they're helping to make a difference in people's lives.
"It just gives me goosebumps to see this much support for women by women," LPGA Golfer Jan Stephenson said.
In 20 years the community has helped the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer raise $17 million.
"To keep the momentum and to not lose faith that we are going to reach that goal, I really credit the community and our volunteers and our staff and everyone that participates," Co-Founder of the Vera Bradley Foundation Barbara Baekgaard said.
The Foundation came to existence after its Co-Founder, Barbara Baekgaard, lost her friend.? Since then she said money raised has helped save thousands of lives.
"We started this because I lost my dear friend to breast cancer and her daughter is here and we were discussing that you know fast forward 20 years her mother would have survived."
LPGA Golfer Jan Stephenson played in this years Golf Classic.? She said she was amazed to see the community support.
"Golf Channel should be picking this up.? It's just amazing to see that much money raised for golf," Stephenson told NewsChannel 15.
Generous donations, women's doubles tennis and golf will soon help Vera reach it's goal of $20 million for breast cancer research.
"I hope we have to find a new cause some day.? I hope we get to a point where ok that's cured now what do we do? And then we will take on a new cause," Baekgaard said.
