After coaching his Denver Nuggets team to 57 wins and the three seed in the Western Conference, George Karl was voted as the 2012-13 NBA Coach of the Year. Over the last two seasons, the Nuggets were the team many fans and pundits considered a sleeper in the West. After the incredible year they had, people probably won't be sleeping on them anymore.
The Nuggets had the fourth-best record this season and had the best home record in the league at 38-3. At one point from Feb. 23 to March 23, the Nuggets won 15 straight games and had a 23-game winning streak at home that ended in Game 2 of the first round of the playoffs against the Golden State Warriors.

Denver's George Karl is the recipient of the Red Auerbach Trophy as the 2012-13 NBA Coach of the Year, the NBA announced Wednesday. Under Karl's stewardship, the Nuggets finished with a league-best 38-3 (.927) mark at home and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference Playoffs.
In earning his first NBA Coach of the Year, Karl totaled 404 points, including 62 first-place votes, from a panel of 121 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Coaches were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote. The award was tabulated by the independent accounting firm of Ernst & Young LLP.
Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat finished second with 24 first-place votes and 190 points. Mike Woodson of the New York Knicks had six first-place votes and 127 points for third, Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs finished with 11 first-place votes and 120 points for forth, and Frank Vogel of the Indiana Pacers finished with three first-place votes and 60 points to round out the top five.
Lionel Hollins, Mark Jackson, Tom Thibodeau, Kevin McHale, P.J. Carlesimo, Vinny Del Negro, and Larry Drew all received first-place votes for their coaching this season. Doc Rivers and Scott Brooks also received votes but not first-place votes.
The award is bittersweet for Karl, considering his team was just eliminated from the first round of the playoffs after working so hard to be a top-three seed in the West. The Nuggets battled injuries to key players Danilo Gallinari and Kenneth Faried during the opening round as they lost to a Warriors team that shot exceptionally well from the floor.
This is Karl's first Coach of the Year award in 25 years of coaching in the NBA. He just finished his ninth season (eighth full season) with the Nuggets, and has 1,131 wins during his coaching career. He's the NBA's sixth all-time winningest coach and 25 wins away from passing Phil Jackson for fifth on the all-time list.
