'We don't sell junk food': McDonald's CEO's comment sparks backlash against 9-year-old

'We don't sell junk food,' McDonald's CEO told 9-year-old Hannah Robertson, but now Hannah's also a target of toxic comments. Hannah's mother and McDonald's discuss the controversy that occurred when the 'We don't sell junk food' comment hit the Internet.

The mother of a nine-year-old girl who addressed McDonald's CEO Don Thompson at a shareholder?s meeting about the corporate practice of using toys included in meals as a means of getting kids to eat unhealthy food says there has been an enormous backlash in comments against her child from the brand?s supporters. The fast food corporate giant also says the comments are unacceptable, stating that it hopes its supporters would show courtesy to those who have dissenting views like Hannah rather than bashing a child for her opinion.

This story has become both a civics lesson and a cautionary tale for parents who want to raise brave children who stand by their beliefs. The problem with helping our kids stand up for their beliefs is that we also have to teach them to weather the storm of criticism from online trolls (those who post nastygrams just to cause upset and hostility), bullies, and meanies.

As a parent of four sons, one of them nine years old, I regularly encourage my boys to express their beliefs, so I can understand why Kia Robertson agreed to accept the offer of the activist group Corporate Accountability of Boston and fly with her child from Kelowna, Canada to Hamburger University in Illinois so her daughter could formally address the CEO and shareholders during a scheduled meeting of the minds.

I also share her shock at the outpouring of toxic comments directed at a little girl by people more committed to an eatery than humanity.

Margaret Meade once said, ?It is easier to change a man's religion than to change his diet.? Amen to that, sister!

After reading some of the comments on stories about this event, I see it?s considered by some akin to treason and flag-burning to suggest that the fast food chain outed in the documentary film "Super Size Me" is anything other than ideal.

What did Hannah say to Thompson in that fateful meeting that has the McMob enraged?

She read from a written statement her mom helped her prepare, according to The Raw Story.

?Something I don?t think is fair is when big companies try to trick kids into eating food that isn?t good for them by using toys and cartoon characters," Hannah read. "If parents haven?t taught their kids about healthy eating, then the kids probably believe that junk food is good for them because it might taste good.?

Logitech G700s Rechargeable Gaming Laser Mouse

The Logitech G-series of gaming peripherals has just been revamped, with better sensors, a few new features, and a distinctive new paint job. A revamp of the classic Logitech G700 wireless mouse, the Logitech G700s Rechargeable Gaming Laser Mouse is outfitted with solid features and customizable options. Whether you want the freedom to switch between wired and wireless, or simply want to customize a few controls, the G700s lets you do just that.

Design
As a wireless mouse, the G700s is a bit heavier than a standard wired mouse?5.3 ounces?largely due to the addition of a rechargeable battery and the wireless transceiver in the mouse. Despite this, it's still light enough to allow for quick reaction times in fast paced scenarios, letting you twitch and pan with intuitive ease.

Measuring 1.9 by 3.3 by 5.1 inches (HWD), the G700s is contoured to fit your hand (right hand only, sorry lefties), with a combination of smooth plastic on the palmrest and buttons, but textured on the sides for a better grip. The grey and black color scheme would be fine on its own (if perhaps a bit bland), but Logitech has jazzed it up with grey and white stripes, much like those on the Logitech G500s Laser Gaming Mouse.

Features
On the front and side of the mouse you will find 13 different controls?eight programmable G-keys, toggle buttons to adjust DPI up and down, an integrated back button, and a toggle that lets you change the scroll wheel from ratcheting to free spinning, and back. The scroll wheel, in addition to regular vertical scrolling, is both clickable (for free scrolling) and has tilt for horizontal scrolling. Using Logitech Gaming Software (available as a free download), you can assign different commands to specific buttons, and even program them with complex macro commands. The software, however, is Windows-only (Windows 8/7/Vista).

On the underside of the mouse is a laser sensor with a top sensitivity of 8,200 DPI, allowing adjustable settings between 200 and 8,200 DPI. Higher DPI settings are perfect for those instances you need to make moves quickly, such as during melee combat or in the middle of a firefight, while low settings allow pixel-perfect control during precision actions, like lining up a sniper's shot. Adjusting the sensitivity on the fly is as simple as tapping a button?a handy LED indicator lets you see whether you've increased or decreased the sensitivity?but for finer control, you can tweak presets in the customization software.

But the most versatile aspect of the G700s is the optional wired charging cable. Plug it in, and the wireless mouse is suddenly a wired mouse, without so much as a hiccup?no waiting for drivers to install, no loss of data, no change in profiles. Plug it in, and you're good to keep playing exactly as you were. And it's not just a data connection, it's also a charging cable, letting you keep the battery juiced up without having to stop playing. Unlike the wireless Razer Naga, the Logitech G700s has no separate charging cradle.

Performance
In the past, wireless mice have been shunned by gamers on the whole, because the 2.5GHz wireless connection is prone to interference and lag in ways that a traditional wired connection is not. While elite gamers may still want to stick to a wired mouse for competitive play?like our Editors' Choice Corsair Vengeance M65?I'm happy to report no major issues with either lag or interference during testing.

In actual gameplay (tested in DiRT: Showdown, Crysis 3, and Team Fortress 2), the G700s performed admirably, with smooth, consistent tracking, no stuttering or lag, and no fumbling over the many buttons on the mouse. Most important may be the fact that there was no noticeable difference in performance between using the mouse wirelessly or while plugged in.

Whether you want a simple wired mouse for FPS action or a tricked out wireless mouse with several macros for your favorite MMORPG, the Logitech G700s Rechargeable Gaming Laser Mouse delivers a solid experience that should satisfy most gamers most of the time. While the less expensive FPS-focused Corsair Vengeance M65 stays our Editors' Choice for gaming mice, the Logitech G700s Rechargeable Gaming Laser Mouse comes in a close second with extras like wireless connectivity, a rechargeable battery, and plenty of customizable options.

It will take just four seconds to watch this knockout

Do you have four seconds to watch an amateur knockout? That's all it took for Garrett Whitman to win in an amateur bout in California over the weekend. He took less time than a sneeze to knock out McKlaine McKinnon at Get Down Promotions. It's hard to judge a fighter's potential off of amateur fights, but Whitman has two wins totaling 49 seconds of fighting. It's an impressive start to his MMA career.

Thanks, MMA Fighting.

Germany pushes to settle EU-China solar trade row

China is accused of flooding Europe with underpriced photovoltaics that undermine its domestic manufacturers ? a problem German?Chancellor Angela Merkel says can be resolved with a negotiated settlement instead of punitive tariffs.

The dynamic is playing out elsewhere in the world as China asserts itself as a global leader in photovoltaic manufacturing. The United States, the European Union, and other nations have grappled with how to capitalize on the benefits of cheap Chinese solar panels while still protecting the interests of domestic manufacturers. ?

Companies in mainland?China and Taiwan made up 61 percent of global solar photovoltaics production in 2011, up from 50 percent in 2010, according to Ren21, a Paris-based renewable energy policy firm.?Europe?s?share of the market dropped to 14 percent in 2011 while the US made up only 4 percent.

The boom in China's solar production has led to a dramatic drop in the price of photovoltaics ? helping to boost growth in solar installation in many parts of the world. The US saw solar installations grow by 76 percent in 2012, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, a Washington-based trade association.

Not everybody is happy with the price drop. In 2011, several major US solar manufacturers filed a trade complaint, accusing the Chinese government of subsidizing Chinese manufacturers to "dump" cheap solar panels into the US market. A year later the US imposed tariffs?of some 24 to 36 percent on most Chinese solar panels.?

Football Manager 2013 is the most successful game in the series

Football Manager 2013 is now the best-selling game in the series, developer Sports Interactive has announced.

"I am delighted to announce that #FM13 has just become the best selling game in the Football Manager series. Thank you so much for all your support," said studio director Miles Jacobson on Twitter over the weekend.

Jacobson added that features and additions to Football Manager 2014 won't be announced until much later in the year, and that the company has yet to set even a rough or estimated release date. He did add that Football Manager 2014 would be arriving on Linux, with one purchase being playable across Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.

Football Manager 2014 will officially support the Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS) version of Linux.

Football Manager 2013 was released in November 2012, and Sega said in May that that the game had notched up 940,000 sales. "A host of significant additions make this the most exhaustive, but also the most streamlined, Football Manager to date," said GameSpot's 8.0 review of the game.

Colorado marijuana regulations signed into law

(AP) ? A set of laws to govern how recreational marijuana should be grown, sold and taxed was signed into law Tuesday in Colorado, where Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper called the measures the state's best attempt to navigate the uncharted territory of legalized recreational pot.

The laws cover how the drug should be raised and packaged, with purchasing limits for out-of-state visitors and a new marijuana driving limit as an analogy to blood alcohol levels. Hickenlooper didn't support marijuana legalization last year, but he praised the regulatory package as a good first crack at safely overseeing the drug.

"Recreational marijuana is really a completely new entity," Hickenlooper said, calling the pot rules "commonsense" oversight, such as required potency labeling and a requirement that marijuana is to be sold in child-proof opaque packing with labels clearly stating the drug may not be safe.

Colorado voters approved recreational marijuana as a constitutional amendment last year. The state allows adults over 21 to possess up to an ounce of the drug. Adults can grow up to six plants, or buy pot in retail stores, which are slated to open in January.

The governor said Tuesday he believes the federal government will soon respond to the fact that Colorado and Washington state are in violation of federal drug law. But Hickenlooper didn't have a specific idea of when.

"We think that it will be relatively soon. We are optimistic that they are going to be a little more specific in their approach on this issue," Hickenlooper said. Pressed for details, the governor jokingly referred to unrelated scandals surrounding the U.S. Department of Justice.

"They've been kind of busy," Hickenlooper said.

Colorado's new marijuana laws include buying limits for out-of-state visitors. Visitors over 21 would be limited to one-fourth of an ounce in a single retail transaction, though they could legally possess the full ounce.

Colorado laws attempt to curb public use of marijuana by banning its sale in places that sell food and drink that aren't infused with the drug, an attempt to prevent Amsterdam-style pot cafes. Food laced with the drug also would have to be to-go orders.

Colorado's laws also include a first-in-the-nation requirement that marijuana magazines such as High Times be kept behind the counter in stores that allow people under 21. That provision has prompted promises by attorneys representing at least two publications to challenge the restriction, which would treat pot magazines similar to pornography.

Besides the magazine restriction, Colorado's laws differ in several more ways from proposed marijuana regulations pending in Washington state. Colorado makes no attempt to ban concentrated marijuana, or hashish, unlike Washington. Colorado also has different possession limits on edible marijuana. Colorado also is planning a brief grandfather period during which only current medical marijuana business owners could sell recreational pot.

Both states are poised to require all pot-related businesses to have security systems, 24-hour video surveillance and insurance. One of the Colorado laws signed Tuesday gives state pot businesses a chance to claim business deductions on their taxes, something currently prohibited because the industry is illegal under federal law.

Colorado's laws also propose a series of new taxes on the drug. If voters agree this fall, recreational pot would face a 15 percent excise tax, with the proceeds marked for school construction. There would also be a new recreational pot sales tax of 10 percent, in addition to regular statewide and local sales taxes. The special sales tax would be spent on marijuana regulation and new educational efforts to keep the drug away from children.

"Public safety and the safety of our children were at the forefront of our minds," said Sen. Randy Baumgardner, R-Hot Sulphur Springs, the sponsor of some of the pot bills.

Lawmakers and a few dozen marijuana legalization activists on hand to see the pot bills signed into law agreed that marijuana laws will see many changes in coming years if the federal government doesn't intervene.

"We are going to be talking about marijuana in the state of Colorado for some time," predicted Rep. Mark Waller, R-Colorado Springs, a sponsor of the stoned-driving law.

Mason Tvert, spokesman for the national legalization advocacy group the Marijuana Policy Project, predicted a lot of states will watch to see how recreational pot regulation works in Colorado and Washington.

"We can regulate the sale of alcohol in a responsible manner, and there's no reason we can't regulate the sale of something objectively less harmful ? marijuana," Tvert said.

(AP) ? Sen. John McCain, a proponent of arming Syrian rebels, quietly slipped into Syria for a meeting with anti-government fighters Monday.

Spokeswoman Rachael Dean confirms the Arizona Republican made the visit. She declined further comment about the trip.

The visit took place amid meetings in Paris involving efforts to secure participation of Syria's fractured opposition in an international peace conference in Geneva.

And in Brussels, the European Union decided late Monday to lift the arms embargo on the Syrian opposition while maintaining all other sanctions against Bashar Assad's regime after June 1, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said following the meeting.

Two years of violence in Syria has killed more than 70,000 people. President Barack Obama has demanded that Assad leave power, while Russia has stood by Syria, its closest ally in the Arab world.

McCain has been a fierce critic of Obama administration policy there while stopping short of backing U.S. ground troops in Syria, but he supports aggressive military steps against the Assad regime.

Gen. Salem Idris, chief of the Supreme Military Council of the Free Syrian Army, accompanied McCain across the Turkey-Syria border. McCain met with leaders of the Free Syrian Army from across the country, who asked him for increased U.S. support, including heavy weapons, a no-fly zone and airstrikes on Syrian government and Hezbollah forces, according to The Daily Beast, which first reported the senator's unannounced visit.

The White House declined to comment late Monday.

A State Department official said the department was aware of McCain crossing into Syrian territory on Monday. Further questions were referred to McCain's office.

Last Tuesday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted to provide weapons to rebels in Syria, as well as military training to vetted rebel groups and sanctions against anyone who sells oil or transfers arms to the Assad regime. McCain is a member of the committee.

Sen. Rand Paul: Scandals hurt Obama's 'moral authority'

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said on "This Week" that the recent controversies engulfing the White House over the IRS, reporter leak investigations, and Benghazi have threatened President Obama's "moral authority to lead the nation," while he continued to question the administration's use of drone strikes against terrorist targets overseas.

"I think the constellation of these three scandals ongoing, really takes away from the president's moral authority to lead the nation," Paul said this morning on "This Week." "Nobody questions his legal authority, but I think he's really losing the moral authority to lead this nation. And he really needs to put a stop to this. I don't care whether you're a Republican or a Democrat, nobody likes to see the opposite party punishing you for your political beliefs, using the power of government to do so."

While he has called for a special counsel to investigate the IRS scandal, in which the IRS gave increased scrutiny to conservative groups applying for non-profit status, Paul would not say whether he believed any crimes were committed.

"I don't think we know so far. The main woman from the IRS that's involved has taken the Fifth Amendment. She's no longer cooperating," Paul said of Lois Lerner, the IRS official who refused to testify at a House committee hearing on Wednesday, and was put on leave from her position Thursday. "I think there needs to be a speedy resolution to this? If he goes beyond 30 days and if no one is fired over this? I really think it's going to be trouble for him trying to lead in the next four years."

And while Paul said he was "pleased with" the words of President Obama's major national security speech last week, he continued to question the administration's use of drone strikes and whether proper due process is occurring before military action against terrorist targets.

"I was pleased with his words, and I was pleased with the - that he did respond to this," Paul said in reaction to President Obama's speech Thursday at the National Defense University. "However, there still is a question in my mind of what he thinks due process is. You know, due process to most of us is a court of law, it's a trial by a jury. And right now their process is him looking at some flashcards and a PowerPoint presentation on 'Terror Tuesdays' in the White House. For a lot of us, that's not really due process."

When asked whether a drone strike should have been used against Al Qaeda leader and American citizen Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed by a drone strike in Yemen in 2011, Paul reiterated his belief that the U.S. should attempt to try individuals for treason, with a judge reviewing evidence before military strikes.

"If you are conspiring to attack America and you are a traitor, I would try you for treason," Paul said. "If you don't come home for the trial, I would try you in absentia. And then the death penalty has been used repeatedly throughout our history for treason, but a judge looks at evidence. And that's something that separates us from the rest of the world, is that we adjudicate things by taking it to an independent body who's not politically motivated, or elected."

Paul, who led a 13-hour Senate filibuster on the administration's use of drone strikes in March, also questioned whether President Obama was truly protecting civil liberties by promising not to carry out certain actions such as detaining citizens indefinitely - while still retaining the power to do so under the law.

"It's not good enough to us that he's not using a power," Paul said. "We want him to assert that he won't, that he doesn't have the power."

Paul said he did not back closing the detainee prison at Guantanamo Bay, which President Obama called for again last week, but Paul said the prison has "become a symbol of something though, and I think things should change."

"I think the people being held there are bad people," Paul said. "What I would do though is I would accuse them, charge them, and try them in military commissions, or trials, or tribunals. And I think that would go a long way toward showing the world that we're not going to hold them without charge forever."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is looking to get his groove back ? at the beach.

A post-Hurricane Sandy tour of the New Jersey coast line on Tuesday, gives the president a chance for a three-point play that can move him ahead of the recent controversies that have dogged the White House. With New Jersey's Republican Gov. Chris Christie at Obama's side, effective government, bipartisanship and economic opportunity will be the unmistakable message in the face of the coastal recovery.

For Obama, the tour helps him continue redirecting the political conversation after two weeks of dealing with the fallout over the administration's response to terror attacks last September in Benghazi, Libya, the targeting of conservative groups by the Internal Revenue Service and the Justice Department's review of journalist phone records as part of a leak investigation.

The visit occurs as Congress is away for a Memorial Day holiday break, a weeklong recess that likely will silence the daily attention lawmakers, particularly Republicans, had been paying to the three political upheavals. It also comes just days after Obama started seeking to change the subject in Washington with a speech defending his controversial program of strikes by unmanned drones and renewing his push to close the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detention facility.

On Sunday Obama traveled to Oklahoma to view damage from the recent tornado and console victims of the deadly storm.

For Christie, the president's appearance is yet another way to showcase his beloved Jersey Shore. The Republican has been touting it throughout the Memorial Day weekend as a destination point that is back in business and he broke a Guinness World record Friday by cutting a 5.5 mile ceremonial ribbon that symbolically tied together some of the hardest-hit towns by Sandy. The state has a $25 million marketing campaign to highlight the shore's resurgence in time for the summer season.

Both men will reprise the remarkable bipartisan tableau they offered during Sandy's immediate aftermath when Obama flew to New Jersey just days before the election to witness the storm's wreckage. Politically, the visit plays well for both men. Christie, seeking re-election this year, will stand shoulder to shoulder with a president popular among Democrats in a Democratic leaning state. And Obama, dueling with congressional Republicans on a number of fronts, gets to display common cause with a popular GOP stalwart. (Obama has not scheduled any face time with state Sen. Barbara Buono, Christie's likely Democratic opponent in the governor's race).

Christie, in an interview with NBC's Matt Lauer on Friday, downplayed the politics, even when asked if ties to Obama could hurt him among conservatives if he were to seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2016.

"The fact of the matter is, he's the president of the United States, and he wants to come here and see the people of New Jersey," Christie said. "I'm the governor. I'll be here to welcome him."

To be sure, New Jersey is still rebuilding. Obama is visiting those regions that have been among the first to recover ? Christie ranks the recovery of the state's famous boardwalks as an eight on a scale of 10 but concedes that in other parts of the state many homeowners are still rebuilding six months after the devastating superstorm struck. Overall, the storm caused $38 billion in damages in the state, and harmed or wrecked 360,000 homes or apartment units.

But the coastal recovery is a big potential boon for the state where tourism is a nearly $40 billion industry.

For Obama, coming off a week that had the IRS in the crosshairs of a scandal, the trip also offers an opportunity to demonstrate the work of another part of government that provides a foil for the IRS: the Federal Emergency Management Agency, whose response to disasters has been met with bipartisan praise.

Indeed, inside the White House, FEMA is perceived as an example of what's best about government. The agency, panned for its response under President Bush to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, has made a turnaround under administrator Craig Fugate and has been commended for its work in disasters from the Joplin, Mo., tornado in 2011 to Hurricane Sandy last year.

Obama's trip Tuesday also comes two days after he toured the tornado devastation outside Oklahoma City, Okla., where FEMA has been the face of the federal government as well.

Josh Earnest, the White House's deputy press secretary, says FEMA represents "competent, efficient government that meets the needs of the people."

"The renaissance of the agency embodies what the president ran on," he said.

Overall, the federal government has directed more than $14 billion so far in aid to help families, support state and local rebuilding efforts, and assist major transportation reconstruction and in community development grants to states affected by Katrina, the bulk of which has gone to New Jersey and New York.

Even as Obama meets businesses and homeowners who have benefited from recovery work, the White House says he also plans to talk about the importance of renewing economic opportunities for middle-class families still getting their lives back. It's a message that dovetails with Obama's attempts to keep the economy prominent by highlighting economic growth after the Great Recession while also making his case for additional initiatives to keep the economy from stumbling again.

Nigerian army says rescues hostages taken by Islamists

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria's military has freed a number of women and children held hostage by Islamist sect Boko Haram, the army said on Saturday, after its offensive in the northeast of the country overran three of the insurgents' camps.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau said in a video earlier this month that the group had kidnapped several women and children in retaliation against security forces who, it says, detained the wives and children of its members without cause.

In their biggest offensive since the insurgency began in 2009, Nigerian forces are trying to chase well-armed militants out of territory they control in remote semi-deserts around Lake Chad, along the borders with Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

"Troops of the Special Operations have rescued three women and six children after overrunning three terrorists camps ... in the ongoing onslaught against terrorists," a statement from the defense ministry said on Saturday.

"Troops combing the forest are however yet to locate one other woman and her two children," it added.

President Goodluck Jonathan has declared a state of emergency in the three northeastern states. The operation has targeted areas of Africa's top energy producer where Boko Haram, which is fighting to create a breakaway Islamic state in religiously mixed Nigeria, has bases and weapons caches.

Retaking hostages was not one of the military's stated aims but the freeing of the hostages is some evidence of the progress the army says it has made against Boko Haram since launching the offensive 10 days ago.

Jonathan has also offered amnesty to Islamist insurgents who surrender and said he would release detained women and children linked to Boko Haram, one of the sect's chief demands.

An amnesty for militants in the oil-producing Niger Delta in 2009 helped end a conflict there that cut oil output by nearly half at one stage. But Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau rejected the offer of amnesty last month.

Boko Haram's four-year long insurgency has killed around 3,000 people and the group has become the biggest security threat to Africa's top oil exporter and second largest economy.

How to Use Eclipse Energies to Grow and Improve Your Life

HJ: You don?t have to be particularly sensitive to notice the amplified energies that occur around eclipses. ?These relatively rare celestial alignments offer?unique?opportunities?for spiritually aware individuals to harness their energies for accelerated personal growth and conscious evolution. ?Eclipse energies are particularly useful for introspection and the setting of intentions for future growth and development.

This happens to be a very unique eclipse in that it coincides with the high Tibetan holiday of Saga Dawa Duchen, which is the anniversary of the Buddha?s parinirvana. ?In Tibetan tradition it is said that the effects of positive and negative actions are multiplied by a factor of 10 million today. ?Therefore, it is highly recommended to spend the day meditating on those things you wish to create in your life. ?For me that will be gratitude, abundance, peace, freedom and happiness. ?What will you be creating for yourself during this time of heightened energies?

Eclipse Energies Amplify the Unified Field of the New Time?

By DL Zeta | Celestial Vision

?

The energies of the May 24/25 full moon eclipse in Sagittarius coincide with the Festival of Goodwill to help anchor and amplify the new time on planet Earth. The Festival of Goodwill each year seeks to create a unified field of love, corporation and peace, and over the next few days, those energies will be amplified by the powerful lunar eclipse.

Jupiter Highlights Expansion During the May 24/25 Eclipse

Expansion is a central theme of this lunar eclipse in Sagittarius. Jupiter, as lord of the eclipse, highlights expansion, new visions, prosperity and abundance.

A lunar eclipse occurs during a full moon when the earth moves exactly between the sun and moon, effectively short-circuiting their natural connection. The lunar eclipse occurs at 4? Sagittarius and its effects are being experienced by many. The effects of some eclipses can be felt three months or more prior to an eclipse and for up to a year afterward.

Eclipses are major turning points at both the collective and individual levels. The sign of an eclipse offers clues as to the themes that are due for a change. At the personal level, the planets and houses impacted by an eclipse offer insights into the transformative changes that beacon to us on the road ahead.

During the May 24/25 eclipse, we are asked collectively and individually to examine if anything stands in the way of our spiritual expansion, visions and ability to receive the love and abundance that is our natural birthright. Sagittarius seeks the path of expansion, justice, generosity, abundance, prosperity and optimism. These are the ingredients needed at this time to help shift humanity to timelines aligned with the new time. It is time to jettison old beliefs and world views that limit and enslave us and prevent us from recognizing our true spiritual nature and identity.

Our Astrology Chart Depicts the Personal Impact of an Eclipse

Everyone feels the effects of an eclipse differently. The type of impact and its intensity and duration depends on where an eclipse falls in a person?s astrology chart. If an eclipse falls within 3? of a planet or an important point in your chart by conjunction or opposition, it is of special significance to you. The nature of the planet impacted by the eclipse offers clues to the experiences that lie ahead.

The energies of a lunar eclipse have a way of magnifying any unresolved emotional issues so we can shine the light of our present-moment awareness on them. Our spiritual communion and insights are intensified during a full moon and even more so during a lunar eclipse, heightening our powers of spiritual perception. Combined, these allow us to heal and release emotional energy held in past traumas.

Navigating by Intuitive Knowing during the Eclipse

Shifting emotions during this time make it difficult to navigate in our usual way. It?ll be necessary for us to stay tuned to our intuitive knowing to understand the energetic shifts that will take place over the next few days. This is a good time to examine our beliefs and observe if we hold any beliefs that are limiting us from experiencing our true path of joy.

You may notice during this time odd and chaotic events unfolding in the world around you. You may witness others struggling with the intense energies of this time. Whatever is going on around you, hold in awareness that the powerful energies are affecting others as well. Entering a place of observing without acting is wise during this time. It is also wise to refrain from making major life decisions during this period.

Interpreting the Symbols of Events Unfolding during an Eclipse

It is helpful to observe details of events that happen during this time and interpret the symbols of these events just as you when interpret the symbols of a dream. This is a good technique to use any time, but the heightened energies of the eclipse make this time ripe for powerful insights and breakthroughs that can change the course of one?s life.

Coming Home to Center

This is a time to examine the ways in which we may be overextended. In order to step more fully into the new time it?s important to build a strong foundation to support our explorations in consciousness. It may be challenging to build this foundation when we are overextended in ways that drain our energy and distract our focus. Thought viruses, for example, tend to capture and enslave our attention in ways that are both depleting and destructive. As we bring our energy into harmony and balance and focus it toward fulfilling our spiritual purpose, we are able to make the most of the opportunities afforded by this eclipse.

Joining the Festival of Goodwill in Consciousness

This eclipse coincides with the Festival of Goodwill, a time when the veils between dimensions thin and we?re far more able to tune into cosmic energy radiated by high spiritual beings, and from the stars and constellations that radiate very high spiritual energy. The full moon during Gemini is a time when people of every spiritual path join together in consciousness to focus spiritual energy needed to build a world of justice, unity, love and peace. Everyone everywhere is able to join the Festival of Goodwill in consciousness. Even if you are unable to tune in at the exact time of the eclipse, you can enter a meditative state anytime in the next few days and allow yourself to be transported to the festival.

Study: No higher cancer rate at Conn. Pratt plants

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? An 11-year study of the incidence of brain cancer at jet engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney in the state ended Thursday with university researchers saying they found no statistically significant elevations in the rate of cancer among workers.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Illinois at Chicago said they identified 723 workers diagnosed with tumors between 1976 and 2004 at the United Technologies Corp. subsidiary. The tumors were malignant, benign or unspecified and included 277 cases of brain cancer.

Researchers examined records such as work documents and cancer registries of 222,123 men and women who worked in one or more of eight Connecticut Pratt & Whitney plants between 1952 and 2001. They also reviewed 11 chemical or physical agents on the basis of known or suspected carcinogenic potential that could affect the central nervous system or other organs.

The $12 million study, commissioned by Pratt & Whitney, was overseen by the state Department of Public Health. William Gerrish, a spokesman for the state agency, called it a "comprehensive study that has met its goals," and the project's principal researcher said the results were positive.

"The news is good," said Gary Marsh, the University of Pittsburgh researcher who led the study.

Employees can be reassured that working at Pratt & Whitney before 2002, the start of the study period, "does not increase your risk of developing brain cancer and does not increase your risk of dying," Marsh said.

The son of a Pratt & Whitney worker who died at age 46 was not so certain, though.

"It leaves a lot of questions unanswered," said Todd Atcherson, whose father, Charles Atcherson, died in 1998 after working at Pratt & Whitney for about 25 years.

Workers and the union expressed concerns about several workers who died of brain cancer within a few years of each other and the study became too large, "losing sight" of individuals, he said.

Paul Dickes, chief health and safety representative at the Machinists union, which represents Pratt & Whitney workers, said he's reassured that the study determined it's safe to work at the two remaining Connecticut plants.

"It doesn't bring closure to people who had illnesses," he said. "I'm disappointed it doesn't resolve those issues."

Pratt & Whitney spokesman Ray Hernandez said: "We are pleased that employees have answers to their questions and there is no correlation between cancer and the workplace."

Comparisons among Pratt & Whitney plants showed a slightly higher incidence of tumors and cancer among workers at the North Haven plant, the researchers said. But further evaluation found no association with estimated workplace exposures.

The slightly elevated cancer rates at the North Haven plant may reflect external occupational factors that researchers did not measure such as other companies where employees worked or factors unique to North Haven, Marsh said.

The study is one of the largest and most comprehensive in an occupational setting, he said. It also is the first large-scale study of workers in the jet engine manufacturing industry.

The results echo what was released in the first stage of the three-stage study in 2008. The researchers said then they did not find statistically significant excesses in deaths from malignant brain tumors among North Haven workers.

Workers and their families, joined by the Machinists union, pushed for the study after widows and union officials said they were concerned with what appeared to be numerous and similar deaths at Pratt & Whitney plants.

Billy Joel: Elton John has 'mom hair'

Billy Joel

Billy Joel hasn't released an album since 1993's "River of Dreams," its famous cover a painting by his then-wife, supermodel Christie Brinkley. But he continues to perform -- he toured with Elton John in 2010, and he reportedly stole the show at the 12-12-12 Hurricane Sandy relief concert.

In a New York Times feature to be published Sunday, Joel talks about why he left songwriting, saying, "I got bored with it."

He's honest about a supposed feud with John, who suggested Joel backed out of their touring deal, hinting that Joel was too afraid to write new songs.

"(John) tends to shoot off his mouth ? he shoots from the hip," said Joel. "I think his heart is in the right place. Maybe he?s trying to motivate me, to get me mad or something. He?s kind of like a mom. ... He's got mom hair."

He's also blunt about his relationships with Brinkley and other beautiful women.

IMAGE: Elton John

Getty Images

Does Elton John have "mom hair"?

"I always get compared to how beautiful they are and how not beautiful I am, and it?s kind of funny, it?s like 'Beauty and the Beast,' " he said. "I don?t mind being the beast, I want them to be good-looking, and if they don?t mind me looking like me, why should I care?"

Music hasn't treated Joel as well financially as his fans may think. He admits that he made about $8,000 off his hit 1973 album "Piano Man," and says he lost perhaps $30 million thanks in part to mismanagement by his former brother-in-law. "I didn?t pay any attention to it, and I trusted other people, and I got screwed," Joel said.

Yet he backed out on a book deal that would've paid him a $3 million advance because the publishing company wanted him to focus on sex and drugs. "They wanted more sex, drugs and rock ?n? roll, and there?s not that much in my life," he said. "What I wanted to do was have a book that set the record straight."

VU to lead prostate cancer treatment research effort | VUMC ...

David Penson, M.D., MPH, and colleagues will study patient-reported outcomes and compare the effectiveness of different prostate cancer treatments. (photo by John Russell)

David Penson, M.D., MPH, professor of Urologic Surgery, has received a $2 million research award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to study localized prostate cancer, the second leading cause of death among American men.

?The goal is to find out what works best, in which patients, and in whose hands,? said Penson, the Paul V. Hamilton, M.D. and Virginia E. Howd Professor of Urologic Oncology, who also directs the Vanderbilt Center for Surgical Quality and Outcomes Research.

Over the next three years, Penson will study patient-reported outcomes and compare the effectiveness of treatment of prostate cancer in 3,691 men diagnosed with prostate cancer in five states in 2011.

Working with Tatsuki Koyama, Ph.D., assistant professor of Biostatistics, and Daniel Barocas, M.D., MPH, assistant professor of Urologic Surgery, Penson hopes to better educate men on the types of treatment available, known complications and overall quality of life following treatment.

?This is very important work focused on understanding the expectations of patients and improving outcomes in men who have prostate cancer. Dr. Penson is an internationally recognized leader in this field and we are very proud of his high-impact work,? said R. Daniel Beauchamp, M.D., chair of the Section of Surgical Sciences.

The $2 million study builds on Penson?s recent success in developing a network of tumor registries that collect patient data that may hold the key to more scientifically proven treatment plans that make the most sense for each patient.

Vanderbilt started this network in 2010 through a $7.6 million Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) grant. Penson?s Comparative Effectiveness Analysis of Surgery and Radiation (CEASAR) study continues to collect critically important data such as treatment, complications and short-term cancer rates by following nearly 4,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Though men diagnosed with prostate cancer have a variety of treatment options, including surgical removal of the tumor, radiation therapy and active surveillance, each of these comes with its own risks, side effects and impacts on overall quality of life.

Doctors already know that patients treated with surgery, compared to radiation therapy, for example, are more likely to experience urinary and sexual dysfunction in the first several years following treatment. And those treated with radiation therapy more frequently develop bowel dysfunction early on.

What isn?t clear is how to take this information and personalize it for individual patients in a way that helps them make clinical decisions consistent with their own personal preferences and values.

?No one wants to tackle cancer by guessing,? said Penson. ?For the first time, we really have an opportunity to give patients the tools and information they need to lead a healthier, fuller life.?

To ensure key findings from the study are made widely available to men with prostate cancer, Penson has partnered with active patient advocacy leaders at Vanderbilt and nationally.

Dan McCollum, health information specialist at the Eskind Biomedical Library and a prostate cancer survivor, will lead patient stakeholder communications.

He will work with the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center?s Office of Patient and Community Education to identify interested prostate cancer survivors to serve on a patient advisory council.

The Tennessee chapter of the Men?s Health Network, a patient advocacy group focused on men?s health issues, including prostate cancer, will assist in engaging patients from outside of Vanderbilt.

And the Health Ratings Center of Consumer Reports will assist with study design and future dissemination of information to the public.

?I?m really excited about this award because it will generate rich information that patients can use to make personalized decisions on both how and where to treat their prostate cancer, based on hard science and actual patient outcomes,? Penson said.

?Vanderbilt has one of the highest volume clinical treatment programs in the world for men with prostate cancer,? said Joseph Smith, M.D., chair of Urologic Surgery and William L. Bray Professor of Urology. ?Dr. Penson?s work is crucial in allowing us to personalize these treatment recommendations.?

Jennifer Lopez targets Latino market with her own Viva Movil ...

Not content with pushing out hit songs, a successful acting career, running a film and TV production company, and launching lines in clothes and perfume, Jennifer Lopez, a woman evidently with more hours in the day than most of us, has announced she?s all set to open 15 cellphone stores in a deal struck between her Viva Movil brand and telecom giant Verizon. The venture is also backed by wireless firm Brightstar and Moorehead Communications, one of Verizon?s largest premium retailers.

The first of the stores will open its doors in New York on June 15, with more to open in Los Angeles and Miami.

So why exactly is JLo hoping to break into the mobile market? Ah, here?s why. According to the singer/actor/entrepreneur/etc, Latinos have a combined purchasing power of $1.2 trillion annually. Presumably she?ll be hoping most of that goes on mobile phones (and JLo-branded accessories) bought at her stores.

?Latinos need a place to go and they need to be catered to because it is such a growing demographic and market and people want to capture that, and they deserve to be catered to,? Lopez said Wednesday at a special event in Las Vegas announcing her new venture.

She added, ?As an entrepreneur, empowering the Latino community is at the core of what I choose to have my businesses stand for and exemplify.?

Staff at the stores will be bilingual and trained to provide customers with a ?culturally relevant shopping experience.?

Viva Movil?s deal with Verizon means it?ll be an authorized reseller, with identical prices and plans offered to customers. Available handsets will include the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S4, as well as the latest devices from BlackBerry.

A bilingual website and Facebook app will also form part of the launch, with Lopez appearing on both to offer advice on the best handsets available. Shoppers will also be able to make phone purchases using the website.

The website is already live, and includes a statement from JLo suggesting ?you deserve a better shopping experience, from premium stores that are family friendly, to being addressed in the language of your choice.?

So how about it? Do you think Lopez is onto something here with Viva Movil? Or is it a business venture doomed to fail?

How I Tricked Myself Into Loving My Workout

I used to hate my workouts. Sure, I did them, but I was frustrated, grumbling, and upset the entire time. I dreaded going to the gym, and did almost anything I could think of to get out of it. At the slightest hint of a cold, I was so relieved to have a good excuse not to work out that I milked it for all I could. Then, something changed.

I actually started to enjoy my workouts. Sure, I?d like to say it had something to do with the endorphins (and maybe it did), but here?s the thing that has completely changed my attitude about working out: I?ve combined working out with something I really love to do?read novels.

At first, reading while working out was just a half-baked attempt to be able to stay on the elliptical for half an hour without going completely insane, but then something shifted. I decided that since my life is so incredibly busy and I love to read novels, I would only allow myself to read novels while working out. I can?t overstate what a difference this simple rule has made for me.

Now I Love to Work Out

I can?t wait to get to the gym. I seriously try to figure out ways to get there, even on days that are not my usual workout days, and it has nothing to do with endorphins. It has everything to do with the fact that I can?t wait to find out what happens next in the awesome novel I?m reading.

OK, so maybe you?re not as freakishly bookish as I am, but is there something you absolutely love that you can somehow tie to your workout? Your favorite podcast perhaps? A bite of chocolate as you finish up? Playboy magazine? I don?t care what it is, but when you connect something you dislike with something you absolutely love, you?re bound to start enjoying your work out more, and when you limit the time you?re ?allowed? to spend on that beloved endeavor to ONLY during workouts, you?ve got the added motivation you?ll need to turn ?meh? into ?yeah!? Want a few more minutes to wrap up that awesome podcast? Then I guess you?ll be staying on the bike a bit longer today, won?t you?

It's a Win-Win

First, it helped me enjoy my workout time far more than I thought was possible, but it also helped me prioritize and recognize that reading novels in my free time was actually cutting into my overall productivity. Now, instead of being hijacked by a really great read, losing sleep, and ignoring my other responsibilities, I simply put the really great book down and know that I?ll get to discover the next chapter during my next workout. Since I enjoy working out so much more, my trips to the gym are happening more frequently and more regularly, so I know I won?t have to wait too long between chapters.

The added benefit of increasing my motivation to get to the gym should be obvious, but in case you?re lost: I?m now in far better shape, I have more energy, and I?m generally happier than I was before I worked out regularly.

What Will it Be for You?

Find something you enjoy so much that it sometimes distracts you from your priorities in life, and then couple it with your exercise routine for at least three weeks. After that, I hope you?ll report back and let me know if it works for you too! I sure hope you can get the same amazing results I have. OK, I?m off to the gym! I just have to find out how this book ends.
