Religare sets price range for $448 million Singapore IPO

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Religare Health Trust (RHT), which will own hospital-related assets managed by Indian hospital group Fortis , plans to raise as much as S$550.5 million ($448 million) in a Singapore listing, according to its prospectus lodged on Friday.

Religare Health, structured as a business trust, is the first such listing in Singapore of a trust with Indian healthcare assets.

The company plans to sell as much 567.5 million shares at an indicative price range of S$0.88 to S$0.97 a unit for its planned listing in Singapore, according to its prospectus, confirming an earlier report by IFR, a Thomson Reuters publication.

Religare Health has a mandate to invest in medical and healthcare assets and services in Asia, Australasia and emerging markets.

The price range translates to a forecast dividend yield of 8.5 percent to 9.1 percent for its financial year that ends in March 2013.

The book for the offering will be launched on Monday and pricing will be on Oct 9. Around 97 percent of the offer is for institutional investors and the rest for retail.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of Fortis will hold 28 percent stake in the listed entity.

CIMB , DBS , Nomura , Religare Capital Markets and Standard Chartered are joint bookrunners for the IPO with Citigroup as joint lead manager.

Honey bees fight back against Varroa

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The parasitic mite Varroa destructor is a major contributor to the recent mysterious death of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Genome Biology finds that specific proteins, released by damaged larvae and in the antennae of adult honey bees, can drive hygienic behavior of the adults and promote the removal of infected larvae from the hive.

V. destructor sucks the blood (hemolymph) of larval and adult bees leaving them weakened and reducing the ability of their immune systems to fight off infections. Not that honey bees have strong immune systems in the first place since they have fewer immunity genes than solitary insects such as flies and moths. These tiny mites can also spread viral disease between hosts. This double onslaught is thought to be a significant contributor to Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).

But all is not lost -- honey bees have evolved a way to fight back: hygienic behavior where diseased or parasitized larvae are removed from their brood cells, and Varroa-sensitive hygienic behavior which they use to reduce the number of reproductive mites on remaining larvae.

To find exactly how bees respond to hive infections, researchers from Canada looked at the natural behavioral of bees in the presence of damaged larvae and compared this to protein differences in the larvae and adults. After scanning 1200 proteins the team found that several proteins, including LOC552009 (of unknown function but similar to ApoO), found in the antennae of adults were associated with both uncapping brood cells and the removal of larvae. Other proteins were involved in olfaction or in signal transduction, probably helping the adults find infected larvae amongst a brood.

In damaged larvae, transglutaminase, a protein involved in blood clotting, was upregulated, which appeared to be a key component in regulating the adult's behavior. Other proteins indicated adaptations to help fight infection, including chitin biosynthesis and immune responses.

Dr Leonard Foster from CHIBI at the University of British Columbia, who led this research said, "Bee keepers have previously focused on selecting bees with traits such as enhanced honey production, gentleness and winter survival. We have found a set of proteins which could be used to select colonies on their ability to resist Varroa mite infestation and can be used to find individuals with increased hygienic behavior. Given the increasing resistance of Varroa to available drugs this would provide a natural way of ensuring honey farming and potentially survival of the species."

Heineken pays $6.1 billion as it nets Tiger beer

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? Heineken NV splashed out ?4.7 billion ($6.1 billion) to gain control over the Tiger beer brand as part of a strategy to significantly expand its operations in Asia.

Shareholders of Singapore-based conglomerate Fraser & Neave agreed Friday to sell their 39.7 percent stake in Asian Pacific Breweries, the owner of Tiger and other popular Asian brands, to Heineken for ?3.2 billion. After Friday's deal, Heineken controls 95 percent of APB.

CEO Jean-Francois van Boxmeer said the company wanted "to move big and bold on the region, which is still a growth market for decades to come, for beer and premium beer."

Though Van Boxmeer conceded Heineken is paying a "full price" for APB, he said there were huge potential returns available, citing a forecast that the premium segment in China, in which Heineken and Tiger operate, will grow by 12 percent per year through 2020.

After the deal, which is being financed by debt, around 55 percent of Heineken's operating profits will come from "high growth" economies, he claimed.

Heineken also sees prospects for cross-selling Tiger beer globally, as beer drinkers have "appetite for something that is exotic, that comes from somewhere else."

Other APB-owned brands include Baron's Strong Brew, DB Bitters, ABC Extra Stout and Anchor. In Indonesia it brews Bintang, in New Zealand, Tui, and in Malaysia, "Guinness Anchor Berhad."

Heineken has owned part of APB via a joint venture with Fraser & Neave for nearly 80 years, but began working hastily to increase its stake of around 42 percent in July. Heineken had to raise its bid for Fraser & Neave's stake to ward off a rival Thai bidder, and it also bought shares on the open market and from smaller stakeholders.

SNS Securities analyst Richard Withagensaid the deal is positive for Heineken.

"Heineken's initial bid for APB was already expensive, but even with the new higher offer, we still believe the deal to be compelling for Heineken from a strategic perspective," he said.

Heineken shares rose 0.6 percent to ?46.29.

South Sudan-Sudan agree on oil but not border

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? The presidents of Sudan and South Sudan signed economic and security agreements Thursday that will allow a resumption of oil exports from South Sudan. The two countries also reached deals for a demilitarized zone between their borders and a cessation of all hostilities that brought the countries to the brink of all-out war just a few months ago.

Sudan President Omar al-Bashir and South Sudan President Salva Kiir signed the agreement in Ethiopia's capital, where they have been holding talks since Sunday. The talks were originally scheduled to last only a day. The sides could not agree on a shared border or on how to address the disputed region of Abyei.

Both sides have been under pressure from the U.N. Security Council to resolve the outstanding issues or risk sanctions. South Sudan broke away from Sudan last year after an independence vote that was the culmination of a 2005 peace treaty that ended decades of war that killed more than 2 million people. But the border was never defined, and South Sudan suspended oil production in January after accusing Sudan of stealing its crude, which is transported in pipelines through Sudan. Border clashes escalated in April when South Sudan troops took over an oil town in a region Sudan claims as its own.

With the deal sealed Thursday, officials say only "technical works" remain for oil exports to resume soon. Some officials have said it will take months to clear the pipelines and get oil flowing again.

The security agreement was signed by the two countries' defense ministers, while lead negotiators inked economic and trade agreements. AU mediators say the two sides also signed a deal to let their citizens freely move between, reside in and work in both countries.

Bashir and Kiir spent four days in an apparent effort to overcome the most contentious issues ? finalizing a border and determining the status of the border region of Abyei ? but failed.

Kiir said Thursday was a great day in the history of the Sudan region, though he said the lack of an agreement over Abyei was Khartoum's fault.

"As to Abyei it is very unfortunate that we could not agree," he said. "My government and I accepted unconditionally the proposal of the AUHIP (the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel) . unfortunately my brother Bashir and his government totally rejected the proposal in its totality." Kiir said. He called on the African Union to resolve the dispute urgently and end what he called the continued suffering of the people of Abyei.

The top African Union mediator, former South African President Thabo Mbeki, called the agreement's signing "a giant step forward for both Sudan and South Sudan." Mbeki said a mediation panel work with the Peace and Security Council of the African Union to resolve the Abyei issue.

Mbeki said monitors would be deployed to oversee the agreed-upon buffer zone between the countries. "Monitors are already on standby, the equipment, helicopters and all of that is required for the purpose are also on standby. They are ready," Mbeki said.

In a sign of how closely the U.S. was watching the talks, President Barack Obama welcomed the agreement as soon as it was signed. Obama said the deal breaks new ground in support of two viable states at peace.

"The leaders of Sudan and South Sudan have chosen to take another important step on the path away from conflict toward a future in which their citizens can live in dignity, security, and prosperity. The United States is committed to working with both countries as they implement these agreements and as they seek to resolve those issues that remain outstanding. We are hopeful that today's deal can help spur broader progress on resolving the conflict in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile, securing unfettered international humanitarian access in those areas, and bringing peace to Darfur," he said, referring to three regions in Sudan.

The freeze on oil production has cost both countries millions of dollars in lost revenue. An economic crisis sent inflation soaring and pushed food prices beyond the reach of ordinary citizens, said Jose Barahona, the top official for the aid group Oxfam in South Sudan, who called the agreements encouraging.

"But the two nations will continue to face an uncertain future until there is agreement on Abyei and the other contested areas, and efforts are stepped up to resolve the conflicts in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile," he said, referring to two areas in Sudan where residents are seen to be sympathetic to South Sudan. Fighting in the region has sent 170,000 refugees fleeing over the border into South Sudan.

Samson Wasara , a professor of economics at Juba University in South Sudan, said the resumed oil exports ? from which Sudan will take transport fees ? would help ease tensions but that the new demilitarized buffer zone will provoke more conflict if the borders are not clearly defined. He noted that the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea has been a source of tension for decades.

"Proper border demarcation will reduce the chance of encroachment by both countries. But in order to do this, the international community must pressure Sudan and South Sudan to agree to something definite. If this is not sorted out quickly it will lead to later tension," Wasara said.

African Union mediator Thabo Mbeki, Ethiopia's Communications Minister Bereket Simon and diplomats witnessed the agreement's signing ceremony at the Sheraton Addis hotel. The ceremony started with a minute of silence for the late Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, whom Mbeki credited with being instrumental in facilitating the talks.

October has been designated as national domestic violence awareness month. National domestic violence awareness month is fast approaching. With that said, in this post we will discuss,? ?How can you help battered women escape an abusive relationship??.

There are several ways that you can help a person in an abusive relationship. First, you must be a patient and non-judgmental listener. Respect your friend or family member?s decisions regarding how to handle their relationship. There are many reasons why victims stay in abusive relationships. Secondly, you can encourage him or her to talk to people who can provide help and guidance. Assist your friend in locating a local domestic violence agency that provides counseling and/or shelter. If the person elects to go to the police, court or a lawyer, you can offer to accompany them for moral support. It is important to be mindful that you cannot rescue the person being abused. Although it is difficult to see someone you care about being hurt only the abused person can decide when to take the requisite steps to secure a life free from the violence and turmoil which occurs in an abusive relationship.

It is important when speaking to a victim of domestic violence that you be an attentive listener. What does that mean in this context:

Ask open-ended questions
Beware of body language
- let the survivor guide you
- don?t show shock so they don?t feel the weight of your reactions
- the victim will feel a need to protect you if you react strongly
- show you are able to handle the abuse history that the victim is sharing with you through a healthy detachment

Abuse survivors will try to take care of you and your emotions.

?
- Your reaction can take the focus off them.
- Let them know you hear them.
Don?t make assumptions about what that was like for them.
Compliments are often not well-accepted by survivors.
- Compliments will probably get a negative response
- Survivors don?t have sense of self, so it is uncomfortable to hear compliments because it is not how they have seen themselves.
Survivors constantly monitor others to see if this is a safe emotional space and person to talk to.
Children show symptoms of what is going on in the home (they are the red blinking light letting us know there is abuse in their home).

Messages that are important for victims to receive: You are NOT alone. I? believe you. It?s not your fault. You can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE.? Counselors there will listen, and can help you.

Messages that discourage victims of domestic violence from sharing their story or seeking additional health from getting free from an abusive relationship:

Did you do anything to provoke the abuse?
Why don?t you just leave?
You can?t blame others for your problems.
All of us have had bad things happen to us.
Why can?t you just forget about it?? You need to move on with your life.

The pervasive problem of domestic violence takes everyone to make it stop. If you suspect that someone you know is being abused, keep in mind that expressing your concern for their health and well-being will let the person know that you care and may even save her or his life.

Nothing is more frustrating than listening to a public speaker deliver a speech or presentation at 100 mph. A few minutes at this speed is one thing; however, 50 minutes or more at this pace can easily lose your listeners. Talking too fast is tiring for both you, the speaker, and your audience.

the faster you talk, the more likely you are to trip over your words; and,

if you have an accent, you are twice as likely not to be understood because of both your speed and your lack of clear diction or articulation.

One of the best ways to regulate your speed is to take a course in voice training because in discovering your true voice, you will have to slow down. (I am not talking about speaking slowly ? you can do 80 mph and still be understood!) The breathing that you will learn will give you total control over your voice as well as your speed. Admittedly, if I have 5 minutes to talk about my business, I will speak a bit faster than if I have 20 minutes.
If you are not interested in improving the sound of your speaking voice but want a means of slowing down, I suggest that you get an audio book as well as the book in written form and practice reading out loud in time with the professional reader. This is a wonderful exercise that can make quite a difference. You will think that you are speaking too slowly. If you record yourself, however, you will discover that your slower speed is definitely not too slow and that you sound ?normal.'
Often those who speak too fast are unable to hear it unless they are recorded. Your inner ear is comfortable with your quick pace. Listen to yourself on a recording, however, and your outer ear will recognize that you are too fast. [Your inner ear is how you hear yourself; your outer ear is how you hear your voice on your voicemail, for instance. Iran unveils long-range drone: state TV

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran's Revolutionary Guards unveiled a home-built long-range drone capable of reaching most of the Middle East, including the Islamic state's arch-foe Israel, state television reported on Tuesday.

The reconnaissance drone named Shahed 129 has a range of 2,000 km (1,240 miles) and is capable of carrying bombs and missiles, state television said. It gave no further details.

Israel has threatened action against Iran's nuclear sites, raising speculation about a possible military strike ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November.

Israel has criticized U.S. President Barack Obama's position that international sanctions on Iran and diplomacy should be given more time to stop Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons, saying its atomic activity is peaceful, aimed at generating electricity.

The head of the Revolutionary Guards' aerospace arm Amir Ali Hajizadeh was quoted on Sunday as saying Iran might launch a pre-emptive strike on Israel if it was sure the Jewish state was about to attack.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, speaking in New York on Monday, said Israel had no roots in the Middle East and would be "eliminated".

Iran has in recent days announced defense and engineering developments, including a domestically made anti-aircraft system, but some analysts are skeptical as to the reliability of the reports.

Israel bombed an Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1981 and launched a similar strike against Syria in 2007. Israel is believed to have the Middle East's only nuclear arsenal, although it refuses to disclose any capability.

Only children are significantly more likely to be overweight, European study finds

ScienceDaily (Sep. 17, 2012) ? Children who grow up without siblings have a more than 50 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese than children with siblings. This is the finding of a study of 12,700 children in eight European countries, including Sweden, published in Nutrition and Diabetes.

The University of Gothenburg, Sweden, was one of the participating universities in the study.

The study was conducted under the framework of the European research project Identification and prevention of Dietary and lifestyle-induced health EFfects In Children and infantS (IDEFICS), where researchers from various parts of Europe study diet, lifestyle and obesity and their health effects on children aged 2 to 9 years.

The study shows that only children have a more than 50 percent higher risk of obesity compared to their peers with siblings. The results were controlled for other influential factors, such as gender, birth weight and parental weight.

In the study, the children's measured BMI was linked to a parental questionnaire that included questions relating to the children's eating habits, television viewing habits and amount of outdoor play time.

"Our study shows that only children play outside less often, live in households with lower levels of education more often, and are more likely to have televisions in their bedrooms. But even when we take these factors into account, the correlation between singleton status and overweight is strong. Being an only child appears to be a risk factor for overweight independent of the factors we thought might explain the difference," says Monica Hunsberger, a researcher at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, who contributed to the study.

"The fact that only children are more susceptible to obesity may be due to differences in individual family environment and family structure that we were not able to measure in sufficient detail. To better understand the causality, a follow-up study of these families will start next year," says Lauren Lissner, a researcher at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.

Over 22 million children in Europe are estimated to be overweight. The study shows that obesity among children in general is three times more common in southern countries such as Italy, Spain and Cyprus than in Sweden and other northern countries.

"Fashion shows have become major events; thanks to the Internet we have a global life audience of millions. So we have to provide entertainment," said Bailey backstage after the show, staged Monday, Sept. 17.

He certainly did that with mini capes in orange see-through plastic or silver leather, mini capes cut for a super-heroine and Eisenhower jackets made as mini balloons and shorn of sleeves.

It all felt a good deal more radical that Bailey's usually hyper edited shows, but the bravura cutting added glory to the meat and bones of this collection, which included the best coats we are going to see on any runway this season, anywhere. From rouched double sheen satin trenches to posh militarist double-breasted town-coats, where the panels, darts and sheer sleekness of the silhouette were truly great.

Plus, you could see the front-row antennas practically twitching when Bailey wowed with a trio of peacock feather cocktail dresses in forest green or Yves Klein blue that were pretty jaw-droopingly good. Panache, power, pride they had it all, moreover, they looked fantastic on the web.

Talk about a home run show, a clutch hitter moment for Bailey when the market is weak, but the creativity has never been stronger.
