Lower the Bar to Maintain Habits on Vacation

Lower the Bar to Maintain Habits on Vacation

Most of us go on vacation to escape the day-to-day routine of our lives, but some habits are important to stick to, even when you're away. The key to keeping them up on vacation is to lower the bar and be flexible.

Leo Babauta at zenhabits likes to maintain a semi-regular exercise routine and healthy diet when he's away, but tempting restaurants and wacky vacation schedules made it difficult. While he did what he could to maintain these habits, he learned that being flexible and setting the bar a little lower was key:

Keeping with your flexible mind: if you normally exercise for 30 minutes, try 5-10 if you?re pressed for time or low on energy. If you normally meditate for 20 minutes, try 2 or 5 minutes. It?s better to keep it going with the minimum, than to only do it if you have the time/energy for the full session.

As we've already discussed, you can apply this principle to working while on vacation by blocking off an hour to check in, and putting your laptop away the rest of the day. Leo also suggests pruning your habits down to just a handful, and setting up to set up triggers like calendar events ahead of time to make them easier to remember.
