7 Small & Simple Habits for a Happy Marriage | World of Psychology

7 Small & Simple Habits for a Happy MarriageAshley Davis Bush, LCSW, a psychotherapist who specializes in couples therapy, believes that relationships don?t require hard work. They do require ?attention and intention.?

She likens a relationship to a plant. In order to stay healthy, a plant requires daily attention and care, such as water and sunlight. Taking care of a plant isn?t difficult, but ?it does require nourishment.?

Bush has written a book with her husband Daniel Arthur Bush, Ph.D, called 75 Habits for a Happy Marriage: Advice to Recharge and Reconnect Every Day.

What makes a happy union?

?A happy marriage has two people who love each other very much and are committed to bringing out the best in each other.? For instance, if your partner is struggling with an issue at work, you listen to them, talk about the situation and ask how you can support them, she said. ?You basically have each other?s back.?

A happy marriage also has a climate of positive energy, which includes gratitude and appreciation, she said.

Habits can either create or destroy this positive climate. ?Most people might say that they don?t have any habits.? But everyone does. You just might not realize it. For instance, complaining to your partner about not taking out the trash or not preparing dinner can become a habitual complaint, she said.

Other negative habits include criticism, contempt, sarcasm, eye-rolling and distancing behaviors, she said.

?The trick is to harness healthy daily habits as opposed to destructive habits to create a positive climate? in your marriage. And these habits don?t have to be grand gestures or sweeping changes.

Bush thinks of these healthy habits as ?very small, almost imperceptible, easy things to do? throughout the day. (Incorporating small habits increases the chance that you?ll actually do them.)

Below, she shared seven small but significant gestures you can incorporate in your day-to-day life.

1. Greet your partner lovingly in the morning.

When you first see your spouse, instead of having a negative or even neutral interaction, greet them with a positive statement, Bush said. It could be anything from ?I?m glad to wake up beside you? to ?I?m so happy to be married to you,? she said. The key is to be positive and loving.

2. Send a sweet text.

?Use modern-day technology to stay connected? throughout the day by sending your spouse a playful, flirtatious or sweet text, Bush said. Write anything from ?I miss you? to ?I can?t wait to see you tonight,? she said.

3. Reunite with a hug.

?Often people will reunite and it?s unconsciously thoughtless,? Bush said. For instance, partners might focus more on checking the mail or criticizing, such as ?Why didn?t you cook dinner?? or ?Why didn?t you take out the trash??

Instead, any time you reunite with your partner, ?have an intentional hug that lasts 20 seconds.? This is actually longer than the average hug, and it?s ?long enough for oxytocin, the bonding hormone, to be released.?

4. Touch your partner at mealtime.

When you?re eating dinner together, make it a point to touch your partner. You might touch their hand or arm, or your legs might touch, she said.

5. Compliment your partner at the end of the day.

Many marriages, Bush said, suffer from chronic under-appreciation. Partners don?t feel appreciated, and they, too, don?t show their appreciation, she said. The relationship becomes clouded by a ?sense of lack and taking each other for granted.?

She suggested couples end the day by thanking each other for one small act they did that day. It could be anything from ?Thanks for picking up the dry cleaning? to ?Thanks for making dinner? to ?Thanks for hanging out with my family.?

Not only does your partner feel appreciated after your compliment, but ?you start to train yourself to look for the good. You focus your attention on the things they do, not just what they don?t do.?

Also, when you go on dates, compliment each other?s appearance, she added.

6. Express your needs from a place of vulnerability.

?Often people will criticize as a way of describing their needs,? Bush said. So instead of a request, it comes out as an attack. For instance, if you?re annoyed that your spouse is on the computer, you might say, ?You?re always on the computer.?

Instead, try: ?I?d like to spend some time with you. Could you spend some time with me?? This invites a dialogue between partners, she said.

7. Feel each other?s breath.

This might sound like a strange practice, but it?s a powerful way to enhance your intimacy. Put your hands on each other?s chest or belly and feel your partner?s breathing, Bush said. Synch your breath together for one minute. Some couples also look into each other?s eyes.

Some days you probably won?t feel like showing appreciation or being affectionate. You might be in a miserable mood or downright exhausted. But try it anyway.

?If you do a loving behavior, you start to feel more loving,? Bush said. She likened it to feeling depressed. ?You don?t want to do the things that will make you feel better. And, yet, when you do the things that make you feel better, you feel better.?

Also, keep in mind that time with your spouse is finite. People don?t realize that their relationship can end because of a divorce or death, Bush said. She works with many grieving spouses, who would ?give anything for one more hug and kiss.? ?[B]e willing to show up? for your relationship.

Bradley Manning's Wikileaks case verdict coming Tuesday

By Medina Roshan

(Reuters) - The verdict in the court-martial of Army Private First Class Bradley Manning, accused of the biggest leak of classified information in U.S. history, will be read on Tuesday, the presiding judge said on Monday.

Manning, who is accused of spilling secrets to the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy website, is charged with 21 criminal counts, the most serious of which, aiding the enemy, carries a life sentence.

Judge Colonel Denise Lind, who presided over Manning's court-martial in Fort Meade, Maryland and began deliberations on Friday, said she plans to read the verdict at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. The sentencing phase is slated to begin on Wednesday.

Manning's lawyers have maintained that he is a whistleblower, and not a traitor as the government claims. He wanted to provoke a broader debate on U.S. military and diplomatic policy out of concern for fellow Americans, the defense asserted.

Prosecutors said the 25-year-old intelligence analyst from Crescent, Oklahoma, aided the enemy by releasing more than 700,000 documents through WikiLeaks. They said the short, bespectacled Manning had betrayed the trust his nation put in him when he released documents on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Manning was arrested in May 2010 while serving in Iraq. He chose a trial by a military judge, rather than a panel of military jurors.

Jury awards $1.2 BILLION as son brings neglect case against Florida nursing home where his mother died

    • Arlene Townsend was not supervised properly, case claimed
    • Damages are signal that neglect of elderly will not be tolerated, lawyer says

    By Daily Mail Reporter

    |

A jury has handed down a verdict awarding $1.2 billion in damages against a Florida nursing home accused of negligence.

The Polk County jury took just over an hour to reach its verdict on Monday, in a case brought by the family of Arlene Townsend, who died after repeatedly falling while staying at Auburndale Oaks Healthcare Center.

The substantial sum, which includes more than $1 billion in punitive damages and $110 million in compensation for Mrs Townsend's son, Gary, was awarded after the six-person jury was asked to determine damages, not liability, The Ledger said.

Treasured: A lawyer for Gary Townsend, pictured with Arlene, says the damages reflect how much he valued his mother

'He is grateful that the jury saw the value of his mother's life,' Bennie Lazzara Jr, who represented Mr Townsend, said. 'To him, she was a treasure. The jury valued her the same way.'

The lawsuit was first filed in 2009, and focused on the care Mrs Townsend received at the home, where she lived from 2004 until her death at the age of 69, in 2007.

Trans Healthcare Inc. and Trans Healthcare Management were listed as defendants in the lawsuit, My Fox Tampa Bay reported.

It was claimed that Mrs Townsend fell repeatedly while at the nursing home and had not been supervised properly, according to The Ledger.

Mrs Townsend fell 17 times while living at the nursing home, resulting in a hip fracture on the last occasion. According to the lawsuit, she was left in bed for days before being taken to hospital.

    ?

The nursing home was said to be short-staffed, and federal and state money that should have been used for care was being diverted elsewhere, WFLA8 reported.

Mrs Townsend's case was allegedly the fourth brought against the company.

Issac Ruiz-Caruz, who represented Mr Townsend, claimed that the case had been about 'corporate fraud, corporate greed'.

'It was an enterprise of a conglomerate that took over a nursing home in Polk County and looted the assets of the company, short-staffed it, under budgeted it and, as a result, the nursing home residents were suffering,' he told WFLA8.

'Ms Townsend was one of those nursing home residents that suffered and ultimately died as a result of those acts,' Mr Ruiz-Caruz added.

The companies argued that they only ran the nursing home until September 2004, according to court documents seen by the Ledger.

Mr Lazzara said the large award was a sign from the jury that mistreatment of nursing home residents would not be tolerated. He added: 'It's one step in the fight, but it's a significant one.'

The lawyers for the family must now try to claim the damages.

The nursing home and an attorney representing the company have not commented on the case.

Woman Sexually Assaulted During Seattle Church Service

Aaron Little, Saint Spiridon Russian Orthodox Cathedral
Aaron Little allegedly assaulted a woman during Sunday services at Saint Spiridon Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Seattle.

A registered sex offender has been jailed on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman as she was in the midst of prayer during?Sunday?church services in Seattle, police said?on Monday.

The suspect was subdued inside the sanctuary by several of the victim's relatives, who restrained the man until police arrived on the scene of what officers called one of the most outrageous sexual assault cases they had ever encountered, Seattle Police spokeswoman detective Renee Witt said.

"We've all seen and heard some pretty bizarre and egregious things, but this ... it just kind of blows your mind," Witt said.

The 25-year-old victim was accosted while attending services with her family and boyfriend?on Sunday?morning at Saint Spiridon Russian Orthodox Cathedral, a church just north of downtown Seattle familiar for its blue, onion-shaped domes.

Police said the assault began when congregants rose during the service, and the suspect, identified as Aaron Little, 37, reached over and lifted the woman's skirt to peer under it.

The victim initially did not realize the intrusion, but several of her male relatives witnessed it and hustled the man out of the church through its front door, Witt said.

But before the relatives could return to their pew, the man dashed back into the chapel through a side door and sexually assaulted the woman, Witt said. The woman's family members once again caught up with the suspect, grabbed him and called police, she said.

"Four people actually held him for us until we got there," Witt said. "He's really lucky they used the restraint they did, considering what he did. Good for them."

The man, who lives in a small town south of Seattle and has a previous conviction for sexual assault, told officers he has mental health problems, Witt said.

He was jailed without bond on suspicion of rape, but it will be up to prosecutors to decide how he might be charged, police said.

World & UK News: Union members 'divided' on Labour

Just 12% of Unite members would sign up as full Labour Party members, new polling from Lord Ashcroft claims.

The former Tory party deputy chairman said just 30% of Unite members would opt in to funding Labour if reforms to the way the political levy is operated went through.

Less than half (49%) said they would vote Labour if an election were held tomorrow, compared to 23% Conservative, 7% Liberal Democrat and 12% Ukip. At the 2010 election 40% voted Labour, 28% Conservative and 20% Lib Dem.

Labour leader Ed Miliband has proposed ending the automatic opt-in of union members which is currently a major source of funding to his party.

Lord Ashcroft said: "(Unite general secretary) Len McCluskey rightly observes that whether individual trade unionists will rally to Labour will depend on whether Miliband gives them 'reasons to want to be associated' with the party. This is largely about policy. But the policies he himself advocates seem unlikely to have the desired effect. McCluskey is quite right that his members are not queuing up to join Labour. And if Miliband takes his advice, nor will they."

The poll interviewed 712 Unite members from a total membership of 1.42 million. Questions were posed online between July 10 and 17. Other findings of the poll suggested 30% of Unite members already opted out of funding the Labour Party, while a third did not know whether they did or not. Most Unite members, 57%, supported the idea of an opt-in system.

The union's membership was divided over whether Unite had been right to give nearly ?12 million to Labour since the general election, with 46% disagreeing but 43% backing the donations. Almost half, 49%, said future large donations would be wrong.

Unite members were more likely to think the Labour Party did a bad job of representing ordinary working people (47%) than think it did a good job (42%). And a large majority of 86% of members backed the Government's policy of a ?26,000 a year benefit cap.

Mr Miliband said: "I think this poll is proving that we are right to want change, because there are people who want to be part of our party, want to be active members of our party, want to be affiliated to our party. I want to give that that choice and I want to make it a real choice."

If 12% of individuals currently affiliated to Labour through their unions signed up to become full members, that would double the size of the party membership, he pointed out.

FDA cracks down on illegal diabetes remedies

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on more than a dozen companies that market illegal treatments for diabetes, ranging from bogus dietary supplements to prescription drugs sold online without a prescription.

All of the products aim to cash in on the country's diabetes epidemic, which affects nearly 26 million Americans. Regulators worry that consumers who buy such unapproved products could put off getting legitimate medical care, which could exacerbate heart disease, kidney failure and other deadly complications.

The FDA sent warning letters to 15 companies, both in the U.S. and abroad, ordering them to stop selling diabetes treatments which violate U.S. drug laws.

Three of the products targeted are marketed as "natural" supplements, but actually contain unlisted pharmaceutical ingredients. For example, Diexi, which is sold as a traditional Indian "herbal formula," actually contains metformin, the most common prescription drug used to treat diabetes. The product is sold by Amrutam Life Care, of Surat, India.

"Consumers should exercise caution before using products claiming to be herbal or all-natural alternatives to FDA-approved prescription drugs," the agency said in a statement Tuesday. "These products should be considered unsafe and should not be used."

Other products include genuine dietary supplements that make unproven claims to treat or prevent diabetes. For example, Diabetes Daily Care is a capsule-based supplement containing cinnamon extract and other herbs. Its manufacturer, Nature's Health Supply Inc., claims it "safely and effectively improves sugar metabolism."

Under U.S. law, only FDA-approved medicines are permitted to make claims for treating or preventing disease.

Other companies targeted by the FDA run online pharmacies that sell prescription drugs for diabetes without a prescription. The FDA issued a warning letter to www.bestcheapmedsonline.com for marketing unapproved versions of diabetes drugs like Januvia, from Merck & Co. Inc.

The FDA warns patients against buying prescription medications on the Internet. Only 3 percent of online pharmacies actually comply with all U.S. pharmacy laws, according to a review by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.

People with diabetes are unable to properly break down carbohydrates, either because their bodies do not produce enough insulin or because they've become resistant to the hormone, which controls blood sugar levels. These patients face higher risks of heart attacks, kidney problems, blindness and other serious complications.

Many diabetics require multiple drugs to control their blood sugar levels.

The U.S. market for prescription diabetes drugs is the largest in the world, with sales of $22 billion last year. Sales have ballooned more than 60 percent in the last four years from $13.6 billion in 2008, according to health data firm, IMS Health.

The FDA said it has not received any reports of injury or illness connected with the products, but is taking action as a precautionary measure.

The FDA sent the warning letters to the companies last week, but posted them online Tuesday morning. The letters gives each company 15 business days to reply and explain how they will come into compliance with U.S. law. FDA warning letters are not legally binding, but the agency can take companies to court if they are ignored.

New electric BMW car "agile and engaging to drive"

epa03699876 (HANDNOUT) A handout provided by BMW dated November 2012 made available on 14 May 2013 shows a BMW i3 Coupe concert car in Munich, Germ...

    Steffen Jahn/BMW / EPA

May 2013 photo shows an i3 Coupe in Munich, Germany. BMW's first electric car is expected to be in U.S. showrooms in about one year.

Although it?s still a year from reaching U.S. showrooms, BMW has set a price of $42,275 for the new i3 electric vehicle that will serve as the launch platform for its all-new battery-car brand-within-a-brand, BMW i.

The little battery-electric vehicle will primarily target urban commuters who are nonetheless looking for more than just basic transportation. The BMW i3 will not only offer more up-market attributes but also will be notable as the auto industry?s first mass-produced vehicle to make extensive use of super-light carbon fiber.

?The BMW i3 heralds the dawn of a new era for individual mobility and for the BMW Group,? said Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management, Sales and Marketing BMW. ?True to a genuine BMW, the BMW i3 has strong emotional appeal, outstanding product substance and a guarantee of sheer driving pleasure. With this leading-edge vehicle and attractive price, we will provide customers with a compelling offer for electro-mobility.?

(See also: Increasing Fuel Efficiency Could Lead Global Oil Price Collapse)

An official unveiling of the production i3 set for next Monday, underscores the global reach BMW expects for the new i3 battery-car, with simultaneous events scheduled in New York City, London and Beijing. The electric city car will reach U.S. showrooms during the second quarter of 2014.

The BMW i3 will offer interior space, the maker promises, similar to that of a more conventional 3-Series model, albeit on a shorter overall body with a turning circle of just 32.3 feet ? something that could prove appealing to urban dwellers, especially those in older European or Asian cities.

The German automaker promises, in a statement, that the new battery-car will be ?agile and engaging to drive, yet ideally suited to driving in dense urban areas.?

(See also: Chevy's Familiar Bowtie Badge Turns 100)

The BMW i3 will be powered by a 170-horsepower, 184 lb-ft hybrid-synchronous electric motor developed by BMW. It will draw power from a 22 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. And though final EPA testing has not been completed, the maker expects the city car will yield between 80 and 100 miles per charge.

BMW has not revealed charging times using a Level 2 charger, though a completely drained battery would likely require something between 5 to 7 hours using 220 volts depending upon the hardware built into the vehicle, TheDetroitBureau.com estimates. The carmaker did note that a Level 3, 480-volt quick charger will provide an 80 percent recharge in 20 minutes.

BMW is the latest among a growing list of manufacturers to reveal plans for entering the electric vehicle market. The German maker?s move is significant in several ways, however:

    ??????? Like the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model S, the BMW i3 will be one of the few battery cars to adopt a completely unique platform and body optimized for electric propulsion;

    ??????? BMW plans to launch an entirely new battery-based sub-brand, BMW i, and will follow the i3 model with a sportier plug-in hybrid, the BMW i8;

??????? The i3 will adopt a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, or CFRP passenger cell mounted on an aluminum chassis.

(See also: First Drive: VW's 261 MPG XL1)

Many in the auto industry see super-light carbon fiber as the material of the future. The challenge is bringing down costs that have, until now, largely limited CFRP?s use to Formula One race cars and super-exotic sports cars. The Bavarian maker is pushing to bring down production costs and has set up new CFRP manufacturing facilities in both Moses Lake, Washington and Leipzig, Germany.

The final price of $42,275 will be offset by a $7,500 U.S. government tax credit. Buyers also will be eligible for various state incentives, such as the $2,500 credit in California. For comparison, the Nissan Leaf starts at $29,650 without shipping costs for the stripped-down model and the upper SL i spriced at $35,690. The Ford Focus Electric has a $39,995 list price.

Climate Change Could Wipe Out Iberian Lynx

Climate change could ensure the wipe out of the Iberian Lynx, considered the world's most endangered cat, new research from Spain suggests.

Currently, about 300 of these adorable, pointy-eared, shaggy-bearded cats live in Spain and Portugal, dining mostly on rabbits. But according to a study publishing today (July 21) in the journal Nature Climate Change, warming temperatures and an increasingly dry local climate could kill off their staple food, making their extinction certain.

Reintroducing the animals farther north could spare the population and even help it rebound, said study co-author Miguel Bustos Ara?jo, a biogeographer at the National Museum of Natural Sciences, in Madrid.

"If you do what you're currently doing, you'd end up with an extinct animal in the wild by the end of the century," Ara?jo said. "If you take climate change into account, the population increases from 300 to 800 by the end of the century."

    One-ingredient diet

The Iberian lynx, a predator about four times the size of the average housecat, once roamed throughout Spain and Portugal. But because 90 percent of the lynx's diet comes from rabbits, two diseases that decimated rabbit populations in the 20th century also took their toll on the lynx. Poaching and habitat loss also contributed to the lynx population's plummet.

Now, the lynx is the world's most endangered cat and its range is confined to two small regions of Andalusia in southwestern Spain. ?Conservation programs have spent nearly $123 million trying to reintroduce the cats into native habitats in the southern Iberian Peninsula. [Images: Endangered Species of the Red List]

    Climate stress

But Ara?jo and his colleagues aren't convinced that those programs could work.

The researchers used climate change models to predict how the rabbit population could fare, and then integrated that with population models relating the Iberian lynx population to its main prey.

In its current enclaves, hotter temperatures and less rainfall are predicted to reduce the amount of herbs available for rabbits to eat, Ara?jo said. That would reduce the rabbit population, which would drive down the lynx population down as well. By the end of the century, the lynx could be extinct, the researchers said.

But there is a bright spot: By shifting reintroduction programs further north, the endangered species could not only survive climate change, but rebound, the researchers found.

This suggests that that conservation programs in general should account for climate change, Ara?jo said.

"One the one hand, conservation is demanding changes in the whole economy, less carbon emissions," Ara?jo said. "But when they have a program, they usually forget about climate change."

Big 12 commissioner suggests new 'federation' within NCAA

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby speaks to the media Monday at the Omni Dallas Hotel. Bowlsby called for a reconfiguration of NCAA governance to better group schools of like resources.(Photo: Kevin Jairaj, USA TODAY Sports)

Secession from the NCAA isn't on the way ? but a so-called "super division" might be.

Suggesting a special convention might need to be called to achieve "transformational change" in the NCAA, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby suggested Monday it's time to consider a new "federation" of schools with like resources ? and perhaps separation by sport.

RELATED: ACC's Swofford envisions significant NCAA changes

"It's probably unrealistic to think that we can manage football and field hockey by the same set of rules," Bowlsby said. "I think some kind of reconfiguration of how we govern is in order."

His remarks, made Monday morning during an annual state of the Big 12 address, followed strong comments last week from SEC commissioner Mike Slive, who said of the NCAA: "Moving forward, there are important questions that must be answered." Also Monday, ACC commissioner John Swofford told USA TODAY Sports significant structural and governance changes could come in January. Swofford suggested a separate division for the five power conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC).

Bowlsby went further than Slive did last week. But Bowlsby said commissioners of the five power conferences have "unanimity" on the subject, and said, "I don't think anything I said was inconsistent with what (Slive) said."

"When I think about John Swofford and (Pac-12 commissioner) Larry Scott and beyond that as well, I think we all have a sense that transformative change is going to have to happen," Bowlsby added. "This is not a time when trimming around the edges is going to make very much difference."

RELATED: SEC's Slive subtlely targets NCAA

The gap in resources within college athletics has never been greater, and it's growing. An analysis by USA TODAY shows the average SEC public school's operational expenses in 2011-12 were $88.5 million, according to the most recently available information reported by the schools to the NCAA. The average Mountain West school spent $41.3 million. The divide is expected to grow dramatically with the advent of the College Football Playoff.

"Northern Iowa and Texas aren't much alike," said Bowlsby, formerly the athletic director at Northern Iowa, Iowa and Stanford before moving to the Big 12 a year ago.

Bowlsby said he did not see a complete separation from the NCAA as a viable option, but said the threat of secession must be retained as leverage "as a last resort."

"I really think that leadership and the rank and file believe that there's a solution within the NCAA, and it's been along those lines that we've had the conversations," he said. "Could that change to something that's a little more harsh down the road? Possibly could, sure."

The problem, as Bowlsby and his peers see it, is two-pronged. Initiatives proposed by larger schools ? the easiest example, he noted, is the idea of a stipend, or full cost-of-attendance scholarships ? have no chance of passing because schools with fewer resources vote them down.

PREVIOUSLY: Is next realignment an NCAA split?

"It's virtually impossible right now to configure legislative proposals that have any chance of getting through the system intact that would accomplish anything in the way of meaningful change," Bowlsby said. "I think all of us are feeling that."

At the same time, the NCAA's governance structure, with its emphasis on presidential control, is seen as out of touch. The people who work daily in college athletics "feel like they're on the outside looking in," Bowlsby said. Bowlsby said he wasn't directing criticism specifically at NCAA president Mark Emmert, but said "we need to reconfigure the leadership of the organization," with athletic directors and commissioners as voting members of the NCAA's board of directors, which is currently populated by presidents.

"We need to reengage the practitioners," Bowlsby said. "The athletic directors, commissioners, people that work in athletics every day. I think it's unrealistic to think that people that spend hours a month on athletics can come up with the right agenda and have the time to move it through the system."

Sports: British Open Third Round: Highlights and Analysis

Tiger Woods and Lee Westwood went back and forth for 18 holes Saturday in a game of one-upmanship, as if their individual match was the only one being watched.

Paired together, Woods and Westwood began the third round one stroke off the leader, Miguel Angel Jimenez, but that quickly changed. Jimenez dropped, as did Henrik Stenson, and Muirfield evolved into the Lee and Tiger Show ? with Westwood of England seeking his first major title in front of a supportive crowd, and Woods, the 14-time major winner, looking to reclaim his dominance.

After a two-stroke swing on the 17th hole, Westwood stood atop the leader board at three under par. Woods, who bogeyed 17 after a misplayed second shot landed in a fairway bunker, finished tied for second with Hunter Mahan.

Conditions were tamer on the course Saturday, as the grounds crew did their best to keep the fairways moist against the heat and sun. Still, only three players remained under par for the tournament. Jimenez, who had played well on Thursday and Friday, shot a 77. Phil Mickelson remained on the fringe of the leader board at two over par.

The most interesting pairing Sunday will be Woods and Adam Scott, who has Woods?s former caddie, Steve Williams, on his bag.

The question, though, will be whether Westwood can ride Saturday?s momentum to win Sunday and follow in the footsteps of the Wimbledon winner Andy Murray of Britain to win one of golf?s most coveted prizes.

    2:30 P.M. A Rough Round for Jimenez

The third round at Muirfield has finished. It was a rough day for Miguel Angel Jimenez, who shot a 77 to drop into a tie for 11th. His partner, Henrik Stenson, shot 74 to finish one over par.

Westwood and Hunter Mahan will be in the final pairing Sunday. Woods will play with Adam Scott.

2:25 P.M. Woods Reflects on Bogey

Woods said he didn?t make good contact on his second shot on the par-5 17th. It caught the fairway bunker and turned the tide on the round ? he bogeyed the hole and Westwood birdied it. After his round, Woods told Tom Rinaldi of ESPN: ?I needed a bullet to get over that bunker. I spun it.?

2:17 P.M. Par for Westwood and Woods on 18th

Both Westwood and Woods par the 18th hole. Westwood has a two-stroke lead over Woods and Hunter Mahan through 54 holes. Woods has never won a major when he was not at least tied for the lead entering Sunday.

2:01 P.M. Westwood Holds Lead as Woods Drops

A huge turn of events at the top of the leader board, as Woods bogeys the par-5 17th and Westwood birdies it. Westwood is three-under par and two strokes ahead of Woods, who is at one under, as both head to the 18th hole.

1:46 P.M. An Ugly Save by Westwood

Westwood made perhaps the putt of the day ? but it was for bogey on 16. Still, a great 15-foot save, after hitting his tee shot into the thick rough off the tee. Now he is back tied with Woods at two-under par.

1:15 P.M. Westwood Back on Top

Westwood (three under) has retaken the outright lead with a birdie on the 14th hole, after a beautiful second shot left him four feet from the hole. Woods parred to remain at two under.

1:06 P.M. Mickelson Is Not Happy

Mickelson, at two over, was not too pleased with his 72 in the third round, considering he thought the conditions Saturday afternoon were better than they were Friday. When Tom Rinaldi of ESPN went over the highlights with him, Mickelson joked, ?Were there highlights??

    12:55 P.M. Former U.N.L.V. Star Moves Up

Ryan Moore, a former amateur champion at Nevada-Las Vegas, has quietly moved up the leader board to even par and two shots off the lead. Moore?s best major finish? He tied for ninth at the P.G.A. in 2006.

12:44 P.M. Schwartzel?s Club Remains in One Piece
12:41 P.M. Mickelson Still in It, Barely

Phil Mickelson heads to the 18th hole at two-over par after bogeying 15 and 16. He is not out of it by any stretch but he?ll likely need to post at least another 69 on Sunday to be in contention.

12:25 P.M. Woods and Westwood Share Lead

Woods and Westwood make the turn to the back nine tied for the lead at two under. Woods leads the tournament in driving accuracy (83.3 percent fairways hit).

    11:46 A.M. No Clear Front-Runner

In 2002, Ernie Els won the Open at Muirfield at six-under par. Today? There are currently only five players under par for the tournament. Nine players are within three shots of the lead held by Lee Westwood.

11:33 A.M. An Eagle for Westwood

After an eagle on the fifth hole, Westwood (three under) has grabbed the lead from Woods. With Andy Murray?s win at Wimbledon, it?s been a good summer for Britain.

11:07 A.M. Laird Drops Off Leader Board

How rough is that rough? Just ask Martin Laird, who found himself in the thick stuff on the third hole and, after half a dozen hacks, ended up with a 9 to drop him off the leader board.

    11:01 A.M. Woods Grabs Lead

Well it didn?t take long for Tiger Woods to grab sole possession of the lead at Muirfield. A long birdie putt on the second hole to drop to three under. Jimenez bogeyed the second hole to drop to two under and a tie with Lee Westwood, Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson.

Bailed-out Putin foe vows to become Moscow mayor

MOSCOW - Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny told cheering supporters on Saturday he wants to contest and win an election to become Moscow mayor after being freed on bail while he fights a five-year jail sentence.

Hundreds of people, some waving white roses, gave one of President Vladimir Putin?s biggest critics a hero?s welcome when he arrived in Moscow on the overnight train from Kirov, the industrial city where he was convicted of theft on Thursday.

The crowd applauded the tired-looking anti-corruption campaigner as he stepped off the train and chanted: ?Navalny is our mayor? and ?We represent power?.

?We have a big and difficult election campaign ahead of us. Seven weeks of work non-stop. And that is only the beginning,? Navalny told the crowd through a megaphone. ?Let?s fight for political power in the country right now.?

Punching the air with his fist, his wife Yulia at his side, he said: ?We will certainly win! Let?s get to work! We are going for elections and we will win.?

Navalny, 37, can run for mayor on Sept. 8 if he can string out his appeal until then. Winning would hand him a propaganda victory and give him of the most influential jobs in the country, with offices a few hundred metres from the Kremlin.

But opinion polls show Navalny trailing far behind Sergei Sobyanin, who is seeking a new term as mayor, and suggest he has little chance of defeating a Putin ally who has state media behind him and the levers of power at his disposal.

Navalny, who says he would one day like to be president, must bank on his support being boosted by public indignation over the toughness of his sentence - on charges he says were invented and intended to sideline him as a rival to Putin.

More than 3,000 people protested close to the red walls of the Kremlin to demand his release on Thursday and thousands more staged rallies in other cities to show solidarity with him. More than 200 people were detained.

    PEOPLE POWER

Under the watchful eye of police, Navalny told his supporters at Moscow?s Yaroslavl Station that it was thanks to their pressure that he had been released.

?You have made it possible to release these men the next day,? he said, referring to himself and Pyotr Ofitserov, who was sentenced to four years as his accomplice. ?Compared to that, it is easy to win elections.?

Navalny, who led protests in Moscow that began against Putin in December 2011, was convicted of stealing at least 16 million roubles ($494,000) from a timber firm when he was advising the Kirov regional governor in 2009.

The sentence was unexpectedly tough and was seen by Putin?s opponents as part of a wider clampdown on dissent since the president began a six-year third term in May, 2012.

But it was followed by an equally surprising move on Friday when a judge approved a prosecution request to free Navalny pending an appeal so that he could run in the Moscow election.

Experts said it was unprecedented for the prosecution to seek bail on such terms after sentencing, and political experts said it pointed to differences in the Kremlin over how to handle Navalny and unease over the renewed protests.

Navalny?s supporters say the decision to release him could also be an effort by Russian authorities to legitimise the election and Sobyanin?s likely victory.

Navalny?s support is mostly limited to the urban middle-class and youth, and anti-Putin protests last year failed to take off in the provinces. The president remains Russia?s most popular politician, polls show.

There is no indication that Navalny?s release from custody will affect the court?s ruling on his planned appeal.

The acquittal rate in Russia is about 0.5%, or one in 200, and has declined in recent years, said Pavel Chikov, a human rights lawyer and head of legal rights group Agora.

Iraq: Sunni mosque bombing, other attacks kills 26

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A bomb hidden in an air conditioner that ripped through a Sunni mosque during midday prayers and other attacks killed at least 26 in Iraq on Friday, extending a wave of violence targeting worshippers during the holy month of Ramadan.

Suicide attacks, car bombings and other violence have killed more than 200 people since the Islamic holy month of daytime fasting and charity began last week, according to an Associated Press count.

The violence is an extension of a surge of attacks that has roiled Iraq for months, reviving fears of a return to the widespread sectarian bloodshed that pushed the country to the brink of civil war after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

Most of those killed Friday were slain while performing midday prayers in the packed Abu Bakir al-Sideeq mosque in the town of Wijaihiya, which is about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of Baghdad.

Worshippers and other eyewitnesses said the bomb apparently was planted inside a wall-mounted air conditioning unit to the left of the pulpit. AP television footage of the aftermath showed the interior of the mosque near the bomb site charred black and shrapnel damage peppering the walls. Glass, shoes and other debris littered the blood-soaked red prayer rugs lining the floor.

One of those praying inside, 30-year-old Mohammed Faleh, said the blast struck as male worshippers, including children, were kneeling during communal prayers.

"I stood up to find blood-stained bodies lying on the ground. The Friday prayer turned into a disaster. Whoever left these bombs has no religion," he said.

Faleh said security forces found a second bomb left near the mosque that they rendered safe with a controlled detonation.

Between 250 to 300 people were inside the mosque when the bombing happened, said Sami Dawoud Salman, a member of the local Sahwa, a group of anti-al-Qaida Sunni militiaman that work alongside government security forces. He said the mosque was unguarded and that the local imam had been unsuccessful in getting increased protection.

"I'm asking the government for a solution. There's no security," survivor Jassim Dawoud said. "It's a disastrous situation."

Diyala province, where the attack occurred, was once the site of some of the fiercest fighting between U.S. forces and insurgents in Iraq. It remains a hotbed for terrorist attacks. The area is religiously mixed and witnessed some of the worst atrocities as Shiite militias battled Sunni insurgents for control in the years after the invasion.

"Terrorism is targeting all sects in Diyala mainly by attacking Sunni and Shiite mosques, funerals and football fields to draw the province into a sectarian conflict. All the victims were civilians," said Diyala provincial councilman Sadiq al-Husseini, appealing for calm. "I call on all Diyala residents to show self-restraint."

Police and hospital officials said that at least 22 people were killed and more than 50 were wounded in the mosque blast.

The U.S. Embassy condemned the mosque attack, saying that the fact it struck a place of worship during Ramadan "is especially despicable and cowardly and exposes the nature of those perpetrating these attacks."

Attacks outside the restive city of Mosul, 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad, claimed four more lives. Two women died when mortar shells landed outside their house in nearby village, and a roadside bomb killed a father and son when it struck their car, authorities said.

The officials provided details of the attacks on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information to media.

The attacks struck as Iran's outgoing president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, wrapped up a two-day trip to Iraq with visits to Shiite Muslim holy cities of Najaf and Karbala south of Baghdad. There was no indication the attacks were related to his trip.

Violence across Iraq has risen sharply since a heavy-handed crackdown by security forces on a Sunni protest camp in the northern town of Hawija on April 23. That raid followed months of rallies by Iraq's minority Sunnis against the Shiite-led government over what they contend is second-class treatment and the unfair use of tough anti-terrorism measures against their sect.

The surge in bloodshed has left more than 2,800 people dead and many more wounded since the start of April.

Attacks on Sunni mosques, for years a relatively rare target in Iraq, have picked up significantly in recent months.

There has been no claim of responsibility for Friday's bombing or many of the other recent attacks.

Sunni extremists such as al-Qaida's Iraq arm that seek to undermine the Shiite-led government are frequently blamed for bombing attacks targeting civilians. They could be behind the Sunni mosque bombings too, hoping to incite a sectarian backlash against Shiites. So could Shiite militias that have been remobilizing following years of relative quiet.
