7 Small & Simple Habits for a Happy Marriage | World of Psychology

Ashley Davis Bush, LCSW, a psychotherapist who specializes in couples therapy, believes that relationships don?t require hard work. They do require ?attention and intention.?

She likens a relationship to a plant. In order to stay healthy, a plant requires daily attention and care, such as water and sunlight. Taking care of a plant isn?t difficult, but ?it does require nourishment.?

Bush has written a book with her husband Daniel Arthur Bush, Ph.D, called 75 Habits for a Happy Marriage: Advice to Recharge and Reconnect Every Day.

What makes a happy union?

?A happy marriage has two people who love each other very much and are committed to bringing out the best in each other.? For instance, if your partner is struggling with an issue at work, you listen to them, talk about the situation and ask how you can support them, she said. ?You basically have each other?s back.?

A happy marriage also has a climate of positive energy, which includes gratitude and appreciation, she said.

Habits can either create or destroy this positive climate. ?Most people might say that they don?t have any habits.? But everyone does. You just might not realize it. For instance, complaining to your partner about not taking out the trash or not preparing dinner can become a habitual complaint, she said.

Other negative habits include criticism, contempt, sarcasm, eye-rolling and distancing behaviors, she said.

?The trick is to harness healthy daily habits as opposed to destructive habits to create a positive climate? in your marriage. And these habits don?t have to be grand gestures or sweeping changes.

Bush thinks of these healthy habits as ?very small, almost imperceptible, easy things to do? throughout the day. (Incorporating small habits increases the chance that you?ll actually do them.)

Below, she shared seven small but significant gestures you can incorporate in your day-to-day life.

1. Greet your partner lovingly in the morning.

When you first see your spouse, instead of having a negative or even neutral interaction, greet them with a positive statement, Bush said. It could be anything from ?I?m glad to wake up beside you? to ?I?m so happy to be married to you,? she said. The key is to be positive and loving.

2. Send a sweet text.

?Use modern-day technology to stay connected? throughout the day by sending your spouse a playful, flirtatious or sweet text, Bush said. Write anything from ?I miss you? to ?I can?t wait to see you tonight,? she said.

3. Reunite with a hug.

?Often people will reunite and it?s unconsciously thoughtless,? Bush said. For instance, partners might focus more on checking the mail or criticizing, such as ?Why didn?t you cook dinner?? or ?Why didn?t you take out the trash??

Instead, any time you reunite with your partner, ?have an intentional hug that lasts 20 seconds.? This is actually longer than the average hug, and it?s ?long enough for oxytocin, the bonding hormone, to be released.?

4. Touch your partner at mealtime.

When you?re eating dinner together, make it a point to touch your partner. You might touch their hand or arm, or your legs might touch, she said.

5. Compliment your partner at the end of the day.

Many marriages, Bush said, suffer from chronic under-appreciation. Partners don?t feel appreciated, and they, too, don?t show their appreciation, she said. The relationship becomes clouded by a ?sense of lack and taking each other for granted.?

She suggested couples end the day by thanking each other for one small act they did that day. It could be anything from ?Thanks for picking up the dry cleaning? to ?Thanks for making dinner? to ?Thanks for hanging out with my family.?

Not only does your partner feel appreciated after your compliment, but ?you start to train yourself to look for the good. You focus your attention on the things they do, not just what they don?t do.?

Also, when you go on dates, compliment each other?s appearance, she added.

6. Express your needs from a place of vulnerability.

?Often people will criticize as a way of describing their needs,? Bush said. So instead of a request, it comes out as an attack. For instance, if you?re annoyed that your spouse is on the computer, you might say, ?You?re always on the computer.?

Instead, try: ?I?d like to spend some time with you. Could you spend some time with me?? This invites a dialogue between partners, she said.

7. Feel each other?s breath.

This might sound like a strange practice, but it?s a powerful way to enhance your intimacy. Put your hands on each other?s chest or belly and feel your partner?s breathing, Bush said. Synch your breath together for one minute. Some couples also look into each other?s eyes.

Some days you probably won?t feel like showing appreciation or being affectionate. You might be in a miserable mood or downright exhausted. But try it anyway.

?If you do a loving behavior, you start to feel more loving,? Bush said. She likened it to feeling depressed. ?You don?t want to do the things that will make you feel better. And, yet, when you do the things that make you feel better, you feel better.?

Also, keep in mind that time with your spouse is finite. People don?t realize that their relationship can end because of a divorce or death, Bush said. She works with many grieving spouses, who would ?give anything for one more hug and kiss.? ?[B]e willing to show up? for your relationship.

Bradley Manning's Wikileaks case verdict coming Tuesday

(Reuters) - The verdict in the court-martial of Army Private First Class Bradley Manning, accused of the biggest leak of classified information in U.S. history, will be read on Tuesday, the presiding judge said on Monday.

Manning, who is accused of spilling secrets to the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy website, is charged with 21 criminal counts, the most serious of which, aiding the enemy, carries a life sentence.

Judge Colonel Denise Lind, who presided over Manning's court-martial in Fort Meade, Maryland and began deliberations on Friday, said she plans to read the verdict at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. The sentencing phase is slated to begin on Wednesday.

Manning's lawyers have maintained that he is a whistleblower, and not a traitor as the government claims. He wanted to provoke a broader debate on U.S. military and diplomatic policy out of concern for fellow Americans, the defense asserted.

Prosecutors said the 25-year-old intelligence analyst from Crescent, Oklahoma, aided the enemy by releasing more than 700,000 documents through WikiLeaks. They said the short, bespectacled Manning had betrayed the trust his nation put in him when he released documents on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Manning was arrested in May 2010 while serving in Iraq. He chose a trial by a military judge, rather than a panel of military jurors.

A tornado warning has just been issued for southern Monroe county in south central Indiana until 2:45 PM. A tornado was spotted 6 miles west of Bloomington moving southeast at 15 mph. The same storm still contains quarter sized hail. Move to a safe shelter immediately down in a basement or the most interior room away from windows.

Jury awards $1.2 BILLION as son brings neglect case against Florida nursing home where his mother died

A jury has handed down a verdict awarding $1.2 billion in damages against a Florida nursing home accused of negligence.

The Polk County jury took just over an hour to reach its verdict on Monday, in a case brought by the family of Arlene Townsend, who died after repeatedly falling while staying at Auburndale Oaks Healthcare Center.

The substantial sum, which includes more than $1 billion in punitive damages and $110 million in compensation for Mrs Townsend's son, Gary, was awarded after the six-person jury was asked to determine damages, not liability, The Ledger said.

'He is grateful that the jury saw the value of his mother's life,' Bennie Lazzara Jr, who represented Mr Townsend, said. 'To him, she was a treasure. The jury valued her the same way.'

The lawsuit was first filed in 2009, and focused on the care Mrs Townsend received at the home, where she lived from 2004 until her death at the age of 69, in 2007.

Trans Healthcare Inc. and Trans Healthcare Management were listed as defendants in the lawsuit, My Fox Tampa Bay reported.

It was claimed that Mrs Townsend fell repeatedly while at the nursing home and had not been supervised properly, according to The Ledger.

Mrs Townsend fell 17 times while living at the nursing home, resulting in a hip fracture on the last occasion. According to the lawsuit, she was left in bed for days before being taken to hospital.

The nursing home was said to be short-staffed, and federal and state money that should have been used for care was being diverted elsewhere, WFLA8 reported.

Mrs Townsend's case was allegedly the fourth brought against the company.

Issac Ruiz-Caruz, who represented Mr Townsend, claimed that the case had been about 'corporate fraud, corporate greed'.

'It was an enterprise of a conglomerate that took over a nursing home in Polk County and looted the assets of the company, short-staffed it, under budgeted it and, as a result, the nursing home residents were suffering,' he told WFLA8.

'Ms Townsend was one of those nursing home residents that suffered and ultimately died as a result of those acts,' Mr Ruiz-Caruz added.

The companies argued that they only ran the nursing home until September 2004, according to court documents seen by the Ledger.

Mr Lazzara said the large award was a sign from the jury that mistreatment of nursing home residents would not be tolerated. He added: 'It's one step in the fight, but it's a significant one.'

The lawyers for the family must now try to claim the damages.

The nursing home and an attorney representing the company have not commented on the case.

Woman Sexually Assaulted During Seattle Church Service

Aaron Little allegedly assaulted a woman during Sunday services at Saint Spiridon Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Seattle.

A registered sex offender has been jailed on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman as she was in the midst of prayer during?Sunday?church services in Seattle, police said?on Monday.

The suspect was subdued inside the sanctuary by several of the victim's relatives, who restrained the man until police arrived on the scene of what officers called one of the most outrageous sexual assault cases they had ever encountered, Seattle Police spokeswoman detective Renee Witt said.

"We've all seen and heard some pretty bizarre and egregious things, but this ... it just kind of blows your mind," Witt said.

The 25-year-old victim was accosted while attending services with her family and boyfriend?on Sunday?morning at Saint Spiridon Russian Orthodox Cathedral, a church just north of downtown Seattle familiar for its blue, onion-shaped domes.

Police said the assault began when congregants rose during the service, and the suspect, identified as Aaron Little, 37, reached over and lifted the woman's skirt to peer under it.

The victim initially did not realize the intrusion, but several of her male relatives witnessed it and hustled the man out of the church through its front door, Witt said.

But before the relatives could return to their pew, the man dashed back into the chapel through a side door and sexually assaulted the woman, Witt said. The woman's family members once again caught up with the suspect, grabbed him and called police, she said.

"Four people actually held him for us until we got there," Witt said. "He's really lucky they used the restraint they did, considering what he did. Good for them."

The man, who lives in a small town south of Seattle and has a previous conviction for sexual assault, told officers he has mental health problems, Witt said.

He was jailed without bond on suspicion of rape, but it will be up to prosecutors to decide how he might be charged, police said.
