Van Persie late show earns United win at Saints

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:23 p.m. ET Sept. 2, 2012

LONDON (AP) - Robin van Persie made up for an embarrassing failure from the penalty spot by completing a hat trick with two late goals in Manchester United's dramatic 3-2 win at Southampton on Sunday, earning the English giants a second straight win in the Premier League.

In a fitting way to mark United manager Alex Ferguson's 1,000th league game in charge, Van Persie equalized in the 87th minute before heading home a corner in the second minute of injury time for his fourth goal since joining from Arsenal for $38 million in the offseason.

Arsenal showed earlier there is life after Van Persie when new signings Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla scored their first goals for the club in a 2-0 win over struggling Liverpool.

The loss leaves Liverpool rooted in the bottom three after the club's worst start to a season in 50 years, compounding its woes after a failure to add some much-needed signings to the squad on Friday's transfer deadline day.

In the day's other match, Aston Villa earned its first point of the campaign with a 1-1 draw at Newcastle, only being denied victory because of Hatem Ben Arfa's stunning second-half equalizer.

Van Persie's late show, which took him to 100 Premier League goals in 197 games, will have come as a mighty relief for the Netherlands striker, after his impudent chipped penalty was clawed away by goalkeeper Kelvin Davis in the 68th minute.

The score was 2-1 to Southampton at the time and United looked headed for a second loss in three games before Van Persie's goals.

"I don't know what I was thinking with the penalty. I was going to hit it hard but at the last second I changed my mind," Van Persie said. "I'm quite disappointed about it. I ask certain standards from my game and at 2-1 down you cannot take a penalty like that."

Ferguson, famous for what the British media calls the "hairdryer treatment" in the dressing room when his team or player underperforms, was all smiles after the match despite Van Persie's error of judgment.

"I was surprised because every time I've seen him take a penalty he usually rattles it into the corners, so I was confident," Ferguson said. "But he made up for it."

Having started the season with a 1-0 loss at Everton, this win lifted United up to fifth place on six points, one behind neighbor and reigning champion Manchester City and three behind early leader Chelsea.

Arsenal is in eighth place, a point further back than United.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Athletic Bilbao scored two second-half goals to beat Valladolid 2-0 on Sunday, giving the Basques their first win of the Spanish league season.

Aritz Aduriz, starting in place of Fernando Llorente again since the Spain striker said he wanted to leave his boyhood club, swept in a loose ball to break through for Bilbao in the 69th.

Forward Markel Susaeta, who had hit the post earlier, added another goal six minutes later with a curling shot into the top right corner.

They were the first goals Valladolid had conceded this season.

Also, Sevilla drew 0-0 at Rayo Vallecano, while 10-man Levante came from behind to win 3-2 against visiting Espanyol.

Sevilla's Alvaro Negredo and Ivan Rakitic both missed penalties against Rayo, which remained undefeated in the league despite having goalkeeper Ruben Martinez sent off for fouling Rakitic in the area with 20 minutes left.

In Valencia, Italian forward Samuele Longo, on loan from Inter Milan, and Sergio Tejera gave Espanyol the lead with first-half goals. But Juanlu Gomez pulled one back with a long-range volley in the 54th, and German left back Christian Lell leveled for Levante two minutes later.

Levante midfielder Vicente Iborra received his second booking in the 80th, but Espanyol failed to threaten and Espanyol defender Raul Rodriguez redirected Miguel "Michel" Alfonso's cross into his own net in injury time to gift Levante its first league victory of the season.

Later, Barcelona looked to rebound from its loss to Real Madrid in the Spanish Supercup against Valencia, Madrid aims for its first win in the Spanish league against Granada.

ROME (AP) - Defending champion Juventus took provisional command of Serie A with a 4-1 win against 10-man Udinese on Sunday that extended the Bianconeri's unbeaten streak in the league to 41 matches.

The match turned when Udinese goalkeeper Zeljko Brkic was sent off for a foul on Sebastian Giovinco, leading to a penalty kick that Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal converted in the 14th minute. Mirko Vucinic doubled the lead in first-half added time and Giovinco added two more goals, in the 53rd and 71st.

Andrea Lazzari pulled one back for Udinese in the 78th.

Juventus has a full six points, having also kept a clean sheet in its opener against Parma last weekend.

Later, Napoli and Inter Milan were also aiming for their second wins of the season.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - Thomas Mueller scored two goals and Bayern Munich rallied to rout Stuttgart 6-1 despite leaving the most expensive player in Bundesliga history on the bench for most of the match on Sunday.

Javi Martinez watched as Bayern scored three goals inside the first six minutes of the second half, then came on in the 77th for his Bundesliga debut.

By then, Stuttgart was down to 10 men following the ejection of Vedad Ibisevic in the 74th.

Martinez signed for Bayern this week on a Bundesliga record euro40 million ($50 million) transfer from Athletic Bilbao.

The emphatic win left Bayern atop the standings on goal difference over Eintracht Frankfurt, the only other team to start the season with two wins.

Two-time defending champion Borussia Dortmund dropped points in a 1-1 draw at Nuremberg on Saturday.

PARIS (AP) - Andre-Pierre Gignac maintained his fine form by scoring another crucial goal as Marseille beat Rennes 3-1 on Sunday to extend its perfect start and return to the top of the French league.

Mocked by critics last year for his lack of fitness and excess weight, Gignac has bounced back with a vengeance this season. He has scored three times in four league games, including the winning goal away to Montpellier in the last round. He also set up Marseille's opening goal for right back Jeremy Morel on Sunday.

Marseille, which has been selling players in a bid to stave off mounting debts, has 12 points from four games - two more than Lyon.

With the match poised at 1-1, Gignac struck in the 84th minute with a stunning strike into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area after Rennes had failed to properly clear the ball.

Marseille took the lead in the 35th when Gignac got behind the Rennes defense and his cross was turned in by Morel.

Rennes equalized in the 57th, winger Julien Feret running onto Mevlut Erding's pass and shooting firmly past goalkeeper Steve Mandanda from close range.

Marseille sealed the win deep into injury time through Rennes right back Romain Danze's own goal.

Bordeaux missed the chance to move level with Lyon in second place when it was held to a 1-1 draw by Nice.

Later Sunday, big-spending Paris Saint-Germain was looking for its first win when it travelled to play Lille.

---

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) - Motherwell climbed above Celtic to the top of the Scottish Premier League with a 4-1 home win over Inverness on Sunday thanks to Michael Higdon's hat trick.

Celtic's 2-2 home draw with Hibernian on Saturday opened the door for Motherwell, which took full advantage to stay unbeaten after five games this season and sit a point above the reigning champions.

Tom Hateley and Higson scored within a minute of each other to put Motherwell 2-0 up by the 12th minute, and Higdon competed his hat trick with goals in the 72nd and 79th.

Dundee moved off the foot of the table by winning 1-0 ay Hearts, dropping St. Johnstone to last place.

Clinton says US can work with China in Pacific

Jim Watson / AP

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton speaks during an event on peace and security in the Pacific, in Rarotonga, Cook Islands, on Friday.

By NBC News wire services

RAROTONGA, Cook Islands -- The United States will buttress security partnerships across the Pacific as it strengthens ties with island nations, but also hopes to work more closely with China as Beijing expands its own influence in the region, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said on Friday.

Clinton arrived in the tiny Pacific outpost of the Cook Islands for this year's Pacific Islands Forum, part of Washington's effort to woo nations across the Asia-Pacific which are increasingly coming under China's shadow.

Clinton told the gathering, which represents 16 independent and self-governing states ranging from Australia and New Zealand to smaller islands such as Tuvalu and Nauru, that the United States was in the region for the long haul.

But she also played down growing perceptions of a U.S.-China rivalry in the region, declaring "the Pacific is big enough for all of us" and dismissing the notion that expanded U.S. activity was "a hedge against particular countries."

Much at stake for US as tensions rise in troubled China Seas

"We think it is important for the Pacific Island nations to have good relationships with as many partners as possible, and that includes China as well as the United States," Clinton told a news conference with New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.

"We want to see more international development projects that include the participation of China," Clinton said, citing disaster relief, maritime security and preserving bio-diversity.

"We think that there's a great opportunity to work with China and we're going to be looking for more ways to do that," she said.

China's Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai is also attending the Pacific forum and told reporters Beijing's presence in the Pacific was not about geo-political influence.

"We are here in this region not to seek any particular influence, still less dominance," Cui told a news conference before Clinton made her remarks.

The wife of a disgraced Chinese politician has been given a suspended death sentence for her role in the death of British businessman, Neil Heywood. ITV's Angus Walker reports.

"We are here to work with island countries to achieve sustainable development, because both China and the Pacific island countries belong to the rank of developing countries.

"Although we are far away geographically, although we have different national conditions....we are faced with very similar tasks of achieving sustainable development, of improving the lives of our peoples."

$32 million in new aid
Despite her softer tone on China -- which comes just four days before she pays a visit to Beijing next week -- Clinton also sought to underscore the benefits of the "American model of partnership" in a region where China has in recent years dramatically stepped up its diplomacy and foreign assistance.

She announced more than $32 million in new U.S. programs on issues ranging from sustainable development, climate change and marine protection.

Ex-US consulate guard admits trying to sell secrets to China

But Clinton also stressed that the United States plays a crucial security role in the region, noting that the U.S. Coast Guard already has formal partnerships with nine Pacific Island nations and was working to build more as part of a broader "pivot" to the Asia-Pacific.

"All of us have an interest in maintaining peace and security in the Pacific," Clinton said, adding the United States was committed to helping fight illegal and unregulated shipping, patrol fishing grounds, and combat other human trafficking.

In a signal of Washington's security emphasis on the region, U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM) chief Admiral Samuel Locklear also traveled to Rarotonga to hail joint maritime exercises and cooperation on issues such as cleaning up unexploded ordinance left over from the Second World War.

"U.S. PACOM is committed to supporting our Pacific Island partners," Locklear said.

Rivalry with China
Clinton's trip to the South Pacific has spurred some criticism in China, where some commentators accused the United States of seeking to stir up trouble as Beijing's economic and political influence expands.

In recent trips to other regions of the world, most notably Africa, Clinton has sought to contrast the U.S. approach to cooperative economic development with other models such as China's, which focus more on condition-free loans and extractive industries such as mining and timber.

Beijing is financing projects across the region including constructing parliament buildings, airports, roads and hospitals and giving out grants for Chinese language instruction.

Clinton depicted these efforts, which some local analysts say appear aimed at building Beijing's influence in multilateral organizations such as the United Nations, as not necessarily at odds with U.S. interests -- although she pointedly noted that sometimes China's methods were open to criticism.

As Clinton preps for Asia-Pacific tour, is North Korea capable of reform?

"Here in the Pacific we want to see China act in a fair and transparent way," Clinton said.

The three-day visit by Clinton and the 60-odd person U.S. delegation to the Cook Islands - which is in free association with New Zealand - was a major event for the nation's main island of Rarotonga, which has only about 11,000 people.

"We are encouraged by you and your government's commitment to strengthen the United States government's engagement in our region," Cook Islands Prime Minister Henry Puna said in his welcoming remarks.

Clinton's trip will continue to Indonesia and China next week, where her new conciliatory tone will be put the test in talks expected to focus on rising tensions in the South China Sea where Beijing is at odds with several of its southern neighbors over territorial claims.

A summit of regional leaders in July failed to reach consensus on how to handle the disputes. Clinton will press them to find common ground and hash out a framework for negotiating with China, U.S. officials said.

One senior official told reporters that it was "absolutely manifest" that ASEAN nations find a way to deal with China. "It's not a matter of geo-strategy, it's a matter of geography," the official said.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly preview the discussions, said Clinton would be stressing the U.S. view "that it is absolutely essential that cooler heads prevail in every capital and that great care be taken on these issues."

The U.S. takes no position on the sovereignty of the disputed territories, though some are claimed by allies such as South Korea, Japan and the Philippines as well as China, but "insists that they are dealt with diplomatically, without coercion (and) without the threat of the use of force."?

Clinton will finish the trip with stops in Brunei and East Timor before heading to the Russian port city of Vladivostok, where she will represent U.S. President Barack Obama at this year's Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit of regional leaders.

Foodie Pen Pals ? First Month |

We met the delightful Rock Salt at a bloggers event and after a good snoop around her blog decided we?d love to join in the foodie pen pals fun too.

Trying to stick within the ?10 limit as well as thinking about postage costs was the main concerns.? Too many good things I wanted to share.

My little parcel went on it?s way and I was really happy (how exciting is a parcel with no idea what the contents are?!) to get mine.

Defo a box of delights. A handy little postcards of cheese (we heart cheese) explained that the inclusions were to make up for the lack of cheese in the box, some accessories for cheese.

Some red chilli crackers ? definitely one to give some oomph to cheddar methinks.? Onion Pickle and in a dinky little jar that will come in handy afterwards, far too good to throw away when empty (which it will be soon yum).? The strangest popcorn I?ve ever seen ? French goats cheese and Malabar Black Pepper ? still too scared to open it :) and a jar of Saffron Waldon honey (another fave of mine honey).

Just have to settle down for a cheese and wine (or beer) fest some night and have a little party.

Thanks Lizzie!

Making office moves affordable | MyMoving News

Making office moves affordableSmall businesses may find an office move rather difficult.? When you have a small company, funding is not always the easiest to come by.? You have plenty of expenses to prepare for without adding a move, but business relocation to a smaller office or one with more affordable rent is usually imperative to a business in this economy.

Vacancies are high in commercial property.? It has led to some of these spaces providing a lower rent or lease, which can mean more affordability for your business as long as you can get through the office move.? The important measure to take is speaking with a real estate agent.? If you can get connected with a good real estate agent you will have someone on your side to make a successful deal, which will lead to that successful business relocation.

Do not be hasty when you are looking for a new office.? It generally takes 90 to 180 days to find a better office space, or at least the right building to move into.? You definitely want to give yourself this time to make certain you make the right move.

The best way to save on your expenses, especially with a business move, is to focus on choosing the right space and one that will help improve your business sales over time.? You definitely do not want to move if there is nothing to gain from the relocation, as this will only make things harder on your company.
