Saints Coach Sean Payton: 'This will be good film for our staff to evaluate'

Sean Payton
Opening statement:

?I?m not going to go through a couple of the guys that went down until I find out. I will give you something Monday, when we are back in the afternoon. Overall, I thought the tempo was good against each other. There is kind of a fine line. You want to be healthy, yet you still want to see some full speed action. I think they handled that well. I thought defensively, we made some good plays. We had some turnovers. There were a few false starts, (and) some pre-snap penalties that we have to get cleaned up. This will be good film for our staff to evaluate and for the players to see when they come back in Monday. But we received enough snaps. It started getting warm, but I thought they battled the heat pretty well.?

It looks like the running game usually got positive yardage.

?One of the things we wanted to look at was two or three specific type runs. We were able to get about 12 to 15 snaps and some of those slash plays. I thought defensively they did a pretty good job. If we got into the second and long or third and longs, there are chances there were a minus play or, like I alluded to earlier, a penalty. I thought there was some good plays made on both side of the ball, and I thought we got good work, so I was pleased with that.?

Looking at the running game. You look in the past, Pierre Thomas, being an undrafted player to make the roster and even last year, Travaris Cadet. Now looking at Khiry Robinson, he seems like he is trying to earn the trust factor with how hard he runs. Will you possibly give him twelve or fifteen carries in the preseason?

?Yes, he is one player (who has produced), and we read our players last night with the scouts. We went through 89 guys, maybe a little bit less than that. A couple of the guys haven?t practiced. We kind of just went through how things have been going, up to date, with training camp, and he is a player that we felt has really come around, mentally. In the spring, for a rookie, small school guy, there was a lot on his plate, but I feel like he is beginning to pick things up. He is explosive, and he can run. One of his strengths would be just his natural running ability. The area that he has gotten better yet is just the protections, understanding who to get, who to block, some of the nuances that comes with playing running back in this offense. I thought he made some pretty good runs out here. That wasn?t surprising, and I do think that he will be a guy in the preseason will have an ample opportunity in games to carry the football.?

I know Junior Galette is going to be seeing an increased role and had some good pass rushes. Is that kind of evidence of what you are expecting to see?

?Yeah he is playing one of those outside backer positions. I thought he had some good rush snaps. We will see on the film when we get a chance to look more specifically, but he is explosive and he is a big part of what we are planning on doing with the two outside guys.?

Overall, on the defense, five sacks and two picks, and a fumble recovery were recorded unofficially. How do you feel about that?

?I was pleased with the turnovers. That is something that we have been emphasizing. I thought they took advantage of those snaps. I had the officials blowing an early whistle. That can be a positive. It goes both ways. I felt like that was the way to go with the tempo we had. I thought we rushed the passer well, at times, and probably got into some long yardage situations a little bit too much for us, offensively. I was pleased with that element.?

One of the things that you said you wanted to look at was left tackle. What did you see?

?I want to watch the tape, first, because I am watching it from the sideline, and there is no way to really evaluate it until you get a chance to look at the video.?

Are you headed up to Canton today? Just talk about how excited you are to get up there and see your mentor get inducted.

?It is a special place. A year ago, we had a Saint (William Roaf) go in, and Cortez Kennedy who we knew went in. When someone that is close to you, or someone that has been a part of your career, is going into the Hall of Fame, it is pretty special. It becomes a little bit more meaningful. Obviously, Bill (Parcells) was someone that really helped me a lot in my career. To this date, I talk with him pretty frequently. I am excited for him and just (excited) to be there to help celebrate with him.?

It seems like Akiem Hicks is playing with a lot of confidence and aggression. Just talk about Akiem and what you expect from him, coming out this season.

?Well, he is powerful. He has good size, (and) long arms. He is continuing to improve and really work on the little things. Using his hands better and shedding. For him, there are a lot of snaps that he is behind compared to a lot of these players who played a lot more football up until the point when they got here. That being said, he is powerful, he is very strong. He is something that his explosiveness is something that you can notice on film. It is just now the small things, the detailing, pad level, use of hands and where he is placing them and how he is taking on blocks. That is the one thing that he is continuing to work on.?

Did you think Chris Carr had a nice scrimmage, today?

?Yes, he seemed to be around the ball. He is a veteran player who has real good instincts, so it is not surprising. Nonetheless, he found himself around the football a bunch.?

Is this kind of a breakthrough for him today?

?Well, I don?t know if it?s a breakthrough. He is a veteran player in our league, so he has played quite a bit, but it was a good scrimmage.?

What about Mark Ingram?s three runs in the first series and the way he pushed across the goal line. What did you think about that?

?It looked solid. It looked like he ran with good pad level. Again, when we look at the tape, we will have the chance to see the decisions that they made. I said this at the beginning, but I think that the tape will be valuable for the players and coaches. It is the first bit of film that we are looking at where they are really cutting loose, and we get a chance to see what a play gained or what it didn?t gain. So, that will be helpful.?

Did the run blocking make it seem like the running backs can hit the line of scrimmage with some momentum?

?We will see when we look at the tape.?

A Moon With The Most Volcanic Activity Of Anything In The Solar System

This moon looks even more like it's made from green cheese than ours does, but it's not. Lame. Io, the innermost moon of Jupiter, is the most volcanically active body in our solar system because of gravitational "tides" exerted by Jupiter and its other moons. And the constantly flowing lava gives Io's surface frequent makeovers.

Australia enlists Nauru to aid in crackdown on boat refugees

PERTH (Reuters) - Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, facing an imminent election, enlisted the help of the Pacific Island nation of Nauru in his hardline policy of denying asylum seekers arriving by boat the right to settle in Australia.

Rudd was reinstated in his job just over a month ago and has improved his Labor Party's previously dismal standing in opinion polls ahead of an election now due within weeks. His get-tough policy on asylum seekers is seen as a vote winner in poorer districts where immigrant numbers are high.

Rudd and the President of Nauru, Baron Waqa, signed a memorandum of understanding providing for asylum seekers arriving by boat to be sent to Nauru where they can opt for resettlement after their claims for refugee status are processed.

Australia signed a similar deal two weeks ago with the impoverished South Pacific country of Papua New Guinea.

Like that deal, Saturday's agreement denies genuine refugees arriving by boat the option of being resettled in Australia. Australia, in turn, will provide Nauru with A$29.9 million ($26.6 million) in aid.

"The expansion of our regional arrangement sends a clear message that coming to Australia by boat is not the way to gain Australian residency," Rudd told reporters in Brisbane in the eastern state of Queensland.

"No matter where people smugglers try to land asylum seekers by boat in Australia, they will not be settled in Australia."

More than 15,000 asylum seekers have arrived by boat in Australian territory this year, igniting a heated debate on refugee policy.

The conservative opposition, until recent weeks runaway leaders in opinion surveys, accuses the Labor government of being soft on border protection. The opposition remains the favorite to win the contest.

Nauru, with a population of 9,000 and a land area of 21 sq km (9 sq miles), has limited resources. Phosphate mining mainly by a British, Australian and New Zealand consortium over the past 90 years has turned much of its territory into a wasteland.

Asylum seekers detained in Nauru under an existing arrangement last month burned down the facilities housing them. Immigration Minister Tony Burke said the priority was to provide Nauru with funding to upgrade its prison, where some 150 asylum seekers are being housed as they face riot charges.

LIMITED RESOURCES

Though Papua New Guinea is engaging in a giant gas export project, more than 80 percent of its 6.5 million residents lead a subsistence life in villages. Analysts say there could be a backlash if funds are channeled towards new arrivals.

Nauru has exhausted much of its phosphate reserves and welcomed the recent reopening of detention facilities as a source of revenue.

Rudd acknowledged the size of the island nation and said its government would decide how many asylum seekers it can resettle.

Tough immigration policies are seen as a key element in winning seats in western Sydney, where anger at the boat arrivals is a major issue.

In response to heightened speculation that Rudd will name a date for the election within days, he said he had made "no determination whatsoever" on an election date. (Writing by Morag MacKinnon; Editing by Ron Popeski)

Summer Fun for Gold and Silver Investors :: The Market Oracle ...

Gold and Silver Warning! FREE REPORT

Commodities / Gold and Silver 2013 Aug 01, 2013 - 10:28 AM GMT

By: Adrian_Ash

Commodities

The long term needn't look quite so far off for bullion buyers right now...

PUT ASIDE the rise in US interest rates, GDP and Fed tapering talk. Just glance at the rest of this summer's headlines, and you'd think it offered a bull market for 'hard money' gold and silver.

? Japan is doubling its monetary base inside two years, while the People's Bank of China has taken to one-day injections of almost $3 billion for the financial system, boosting shares after a scary jump in bank interest rates...
? Wage talks in South Africa's gold mining industry stalled Monday, with management offering 5% where the unions want a raise of 60-100%...
? Giant banks who swerved around the financial crisis 5 years ago are now risking a crash in summer 2013. Barclays bank ? "widely regarded as one of the UK's strongest" according to the BBC ? is nearly ?13bn short of capital requirements (almost $20bn). Deutsche Bank paid ?630m ($830m) in April-to-June alone to settle lawsuits from customers mis-sold rubbish US mortgage investments...

Yet here we are, back down below April's crash low of $1322 in gold and well under $20 for silver. Yes, that's above end-June's three-year lows. Yes, the rebound has been strong so far. But so it should be after prices fell at their fastest pace in three decades. Other big banks are meantime making great money trading the rise in longer-term US interest rates.

Those rates have risen because the US Fed says it's likely to start trimming its money-printing QE program soon. And those cuts only look more likely after the US Treasury said Monday that its deficit ? the gap between what Washington spends and receives ? has shrunk 40% so far this fiscal year, cutting the amount of new debt it needs to sell to the bond market.

As the trading desks thin out for the summer however, some big-name investors with longer time horizons are buying this drop in bullion. Michael Cuggino, president of the $12bn Permanent Portfolio Family of Funds, thinks gold will rise long-term on rising inflation. "What you're seeing," reckons Mark Mobius, emerging-markets specialist at Franklin Templeton, which now runs $813bn for investors, "is a dissonance between real demand and derivatives. So from a longer-term perspective we believe gold prices will trend upwards."

On that point, Swiss bank UBS ? a London market-maker and major world dealer in bullion ? calls China's physical demand "strong" and says it "holds the promise of a sturdy price floor" as banks in the world's second largest economy widen access to gold bullion through new savings accounts. And on the US government's shrinking deficit, note that:

? it's still forecast well over $1 trillion for 2013 as a whole, the fourth largest ever;
? the relief comes from a one-off payment of $66bn from the state-guaranteed mortgage lenders Fannie and Freddie, nationalized during the 2008 crisis;
? there's still the annual stupidity of the "debt ceiling" to get through, perhaps with the real fun and games pushed back to November but risking the same kind of panic which helped gold hit $1920 per ounce in summer 2011.

Short term ? and this news-packed summer week more than most ? precious metals owners who don't like volatility should look away now. But further ahead, there are lots of good reasons to buy gold or silver. Chief among them is the unique exposure it gives Western investors to Asia's long-term growth.

China, for instance, is set to overtake India as the world's No.1 gold consumer this year. Buying perhaps 1,000 tonnes of gold ? around 1 ounce in every 4 sold worldwide in 2013 ? China is growing its jewellery demand, but not as fast as it's hoarding investment gold bars and coin. So says Marcus Grubb of market-development organization (and BullionVault shareholder) the World Gold Council. And with the Shanghai Gold Exchange delivering 1,000 tonnes in the first half of 2013 alone ? more than its users took in all of 2012 ? that switch looks a good call already.

Marcus isn't the first person to forecast this switch. We tried it in 2009, as did other better-informed analysts. We were all wrong then. But 2013 looks more certain, as Marcus notes. Because compared to China's surging demand, Indian buying is of course being crimped by the government's attempts to cut demand. So far all it's managed is to crimp supply, boost prices, and unleash a return to smuggling.

Why does this matter to Western investors? First because, behind the noise of US futures trading, physically-settled metal is what counts in the end. And China, like India, continues to buy more gold at rising prices. Secondly, and longer-term, the economic future of Asian households looks a lot like the developed West in terms of disposable income. But unlike the modern West, the first thing which Indian and Chinese families with cash left over at the end of the month choose to do ? their primary savings choice ? is very often to buy gold.

Take note: The path between the last 20 years of Chinese economic growth and the much-lauded "Chinese century" before us may not prove smooth. Western analysts have long predicted a "hard landing" in China. But the near-term risks look plain (huge local government debts, massive property bubble, misallocation of national funds in pointless infrastructure). The upshot for gold and by extension for silver prices might not be pretty. It's worth reviewing what SocGen's latest Cross Asset Strategy note says on the subject of gold and a China hard landing.

The decline of the West has also long been forecast by misery-guts like ourselves. But rising prosperity in Asia will likely mean stagnant or falling standards of living here, on a relative basis if not absolute. And as we've long suggested, buying a little of what China uses to store its growing wealth makes sense long term.

But blocking out the noise won't be easy meantime.
